| I forget the reason it was started. I'm too lazy to go look in my yorkie books right now. I know it certainly does help with the cleanliness aspect, they're cute like little boxes with that nubby little tail, and just think how many have been saved from having doors slam on them! They're cute both ways, but I've never seen one in real life with a full tail. I've seen pictures.

| My Reece has a full tail that I love love love..docked is cute as heck too..I am not sure of the reason they dock, probably for when yorkies were used as working dogs, and they didnt want their tails to get in the way?? I dont know lol.. Dawn |

| My thinking of them doing this is because back when they used yorkies for ratting, docking the tails would make it easier to grab hold of to pull them out. It doesn't make sense because you would think that a longer tail would work better, but I guess a nub could work as a more stable handle. JMO.

| Originally, tails were docked to prevent them from injury. Show breeders do it because AKC insists that it must be done to show your dogs. Other breeders do it because people who buy the pups want the look that the cropping and docking gives them. |

| It is true - a lot of working breeds had their tails docked years ago - so that their tails wouldn't impede their work - or become injured when they worked. But - most of these working breeds no longer do the work they used to do and are mainly pets today. So, for this reason, it is felt that docking tails is no longer necessary --- which it isn't.... | Sorry I prefer them Docked I've seen an un-docked tail and I'm sorry but it makes them look (conformation wise) better if they are "Docked"......I've seen them as Babies and the look like little rats. IMO a docked tail makes their overall body outline seem more compact, hygiene (thank goodness for "Sanitary shaves") I cannot imagine having to clean them every time after they go to the bathroom with a Baby wipe? No thanks Besides I'm a "Purist".....I want my Babies to look as close to the AKC. Standard as possible and I happen to love all their characteristic little personality traits that took a few hundred years to Breed? OK. I looked it up in all of my books, they don't mention a reason other than for "Looks", now I'm curious to see what the answer is now? |

| In England its not as common at all, I personally dont get why you'd put an animal through any pain purely for aesthetic reasons ? though I'm guessing its done in a kind a manner as possible, and if through years of breeding we have altered markings and size the fact that the tail remains must show God had a plan !! |

| Wow....Do Yorkies in America still have their tails docked? My Yorkie has her tail docked but she is 16 years old now and it is very rarely done in the UK now, I havent seen another Yorkie with its tail docked for years. My parents Yorkie and my sisters 3 Yorkies all have tails and they look just fine. Not sure why Yorkies (or any other dogs) have their tails docked, but its not really the done thing now...in the UK anyway! |

| In Norway it's even illegal to dock tails! I think they look just as cute with long tails and I just can't see a reason why tails should be docked anyway. |

| Yes, we still dock tails in America. I actually had the tails docked and dewclaws removed with our litter this past Saturday. The let out one quick whimper and were sleeping before the vet could finish and put them down. Momma licked the area as soon as I put them back with her and they didn't seem to mind at all. It wasn't nearly as bad as many try to make it out to be. They get more upset and cry more when they are hungry. |
