HELP!! Crate Training We are crate training Maggie. She is almost 10 weeks old. Husband and I are both retired, so being in the crate for long periods isn't the problem. We take her outside many times a day and right before bedtime. I thought she was sleeping all night. I have been sleeping about 15 feet from her crate. She never says a peep. Wakes up at 5-5:30AM. I take her out and she floods the yard. I have been really impressed. Yesterday afternoon I decided to wash her blankie. It was wet in the corner. Her crate if a very small metal one, with a movable grow wall. I even made a cover for it, so she could sleep in a den like atmosphere. We have the sleeping area in her crate choked down to just enough room for her to stand and turn around. I put a few stuffed animals around the edges for cozy comfort. Last night I got up at 2:30, woke her up to take her outside. She flooded the grass. I put her back in her crate bed. She got up at 5:30 as usual. I checked her blankie and it was wet. Hope I covered it all. Between me being a short order cook for her and now her laundry maid, I'm pooped. So if anybody knows how to get them to eat and also to stop weeing in their crate, I would be very grateful.

That is indeed a bit puzzling. How often does she go pee pee throughout the day? Or what is the period of time between peeing during the day? When they are younger, they do not have as much control of their bladder and it takes time to develop and learn when and where to go potty. Good luck with Maggie, she's a doll!

Rowdy pottied in his crate a few times when we first brought him home, but it soon stopped. I was worried too because we had another puppy a few years ago who never ever went in the crate. How big is the crate? I remember someone saying that if it is too big, they will use a corner. After the first few days, Rowdy yips to wake me up when he needs to go out. He goes to sleep in the living room about 9:00pm, I take him out before I go to bed about 11:00 and although I think he is sleep walking, he usually pees. When I go to bed I put him in his crate by my bed. Then sometimes he yips and wakes me up about 3:00 to go out to potty but sometimes he sleeps till 6:00 when I get up.

I felt like a short order cook when my puppies were real young too. I was always making some concoction in the hopes that they would reward me by eating a couple of bites. It got so bad that they wouldn't eat unless they were hand fed!! They expected boiled chicken and warm wet food. Finally at 6 months of age I got brave enought to leave the dry kibble out and not give them anything else. I did give nutrical but that was all and by the end of the day they were eating the kibble!! Yahoo!! Freeom! I do treat them now several times a day when we train with treats and special food so I still spoil them but they are getting the healthy kibble and their teeth are getting cleaned.

Miss Pee Pee Pot Maggie Hi Fasteddie, Thank you for responding to my problem. Maggie's crate is 13X23. It came with a grow wall that you can adjust as they grow. We have the area choked down to about 13X10. The latest is a mess. I got so concerned about her tee teeing in her crate that I slept with one eye open and took her outside every two hours--all through the night. I figured if she got use to that, then she would say something to wake me up. Well, after about 4 nights of that, I literally went into a sleep coma. I was totally exhausted to the point I was confused. Now what I'm doing is leaving the crate door open at night. I take her outside before bedtime and an additional two more times during the night. I have been leaving a tinkle pad out at night, just in case. So far we have a dry tinkle pad every morning. During the day she is taken out after she eats, sleeps, and plays. If you ask her if she needs to go tee tee, she will beat you to the door every time. She is so smart, just that she has a very tired mommy. They say that Yorkies are great for the elderly, retired and handicapp. Well, I'm two out of three. No wonder God doesn't give us babies. We couldn't keep up without crashing out----like me.

Picky,Picky Maggie Hi Kim, Your response is so encouraging. Maggie is only 10 weeks old. I still have a few more months of being a Short Order Cook. One day I think I have her appetite solved and the next day she has changed her mind. Believe me, I will for sure do just what you did when I know she is can handle the resignation of her own personal chef.
