HELP!! How do I get the mats out!!! I recently got a new pup and she has/had the most beautiful coat. I have been grooming her and going through her pretty faithfully but it got away from me for a few days and YUCK! Her baby fluff is all matted underneath! I have been working on it slowly but I don't seem to be making any progress. I really don't want to cut her fluff! I am afraid I will have a girl with "dreadlocks"! I have never had this issue with my other dog (when he was a pup)... Any suggestions? Thanks!

I had to cut off her "fluff" lol when I first got Princess... maybe there is a special type of shampoo that gets rid of tangles... | |

I would try to get as many as you can out...it may take hours...give her a bath and also use a deep conditioner....that helped with mine.

| I would get some Cowboy Magic (feed stores usually carry it, or Ebay). Other members on here have mentioned Johnson &Johnson, no more tangles works well too. My little boy will matt and the Cowboy Magic works great on him. When I use the Cowboy Magic and get the matts out, they seem to stay out for at least a week. I just have to stay on him and keep him combed out all the time.

I agree Cowboy Magic works great for me!! I apply some and then comb her out with a flea comb. Lately I have not used it because Mimi got a hair cut and her hair is short but will use it when she grows it out again!

I also use the Cowboy Magic Concentrated Detangler. Here is the website and they have a store locator to see if you can get it local. www.cowboymagic.com It also helps to cut the matts apart in the same direction the hair grows - parallel to the hair - you will lose a little hair, but not as much as cutting the entire matt out.

Yup, I fourth that! I just got mine a little over a week ago and I LOVE it! It is amazing for matts. Just be very careful with the Detangle and Shine, a little goes a long way! I learned that the hard way, but all of Marilynn's matts were out and still are. I got all of the matts out in less than an hour, that was something that had never happened before. I had a hard time finding a good conditioner that wouldn't make her matt more though, I generally would brush for an hour or more and not even make a dent in it. Then after a day or so the ones I did get were right back and worse than ever. Thats why I love CM. I've also heard on here that Aussie 3 Minute Miracle is great as well, have yet to try it though.

Thanks! Thanks for all the advice! I just spent the last hour with the comb and scissors! She still looks cute but she was shell shocked from all the combing! It was weird though, deep in her hair it seemed like she had dandruff but only in the mats! My older Yorkie does not get like this deep in his fur! I have only had her for about 4 weeks and she has had 3 baths so she is clean... I will definately try the Cowboy Magic!

I 5th that about cowboy magic. I also use a horse product called show sheen hair polish after a bath, rather than the conditioner. It makes the comb or brush slide through and really makes the coat nice in between poo's. I also use a comb that has rotating teeth that doesn't pull so much.

Cowboy Magic and a very small de-matting tool NOT the rake but the little razor tool. Both are at Petsmart and on their website!

Whenever you've got mats don't get them wet first. That makes the mats tighten... Always get mats out first...

Yeah, the store I went to didn't even have a conditioner. I bought the shampoo and Detangle and Shine, the Detangle and Shine is what does all the work. If I had just used the Shampoo I would've been SOL. It works wonders on Marilynn and Melvins hair, makes my rotties coat supper soft, and my kids hair way manageable.
