| Yorkies and little ones.. I was wondering how most Yorkies act around little kids. Tilly really isn't around little kids, the youngest my little brother who is 16 (not quite little anymore) and my SIL who is 11. They both really don't bother her. Since I am due in January is there anything I can do to prepare Tilly for a young child? She is use to having all of mommys attention and I want this to be as easy as it can be of an adjustment for her.

| All I can say is that knowing you were planning to have children, then you should have been socializing your yorkie around all ages of children before. BUT since you didn't do that, here's a helping hand http://www.my-dog.info/getting-a-dog/dogs-for-kids.asp

| I have 5 children and both of my dogs love them to pieces! They hadn't been around kids before I got them at 2 and 3 yrs. of age either. We had no problems what so ever. The thing is, you are having a baby, not a rambunctious 2 yr. old that's instantly going to pull her hair and ears. Your dog will grow with your baby and will adapt. Teach your child to respect her and they will grow to be good friends. I really believe that it is how the child behaves that will determine their relationship.

Thats what I've been telling my family. Tilly will grow to be use to him. They just wonder if she will act out of jealousy and snap at him. I think she will do fine. The first week she will probably just be curious.

| When dh and I got married, I already had 3 kids from a previous marriage. He had a black lab/border collie mix that was 13 at the time. She bit me the first time I met her. She's not mean, just old and grouchy. I was nervous to have her around my kids. She eventually made friends with my oldest and he can pet and love on her all the time. We all can, but he's the closest to her. She's now 16. When we had our first child together, I was really nervous about how she would be with a baby. Because she had been the only dog and had all of our constant attention. When the baby was born, she merely sniffed it out and went about her way. It didn't seem to affect her at all! Now that he is 2, he's getting to where he's wanting to pet her, but she runs from him. He knows that he can't go up to her. It's a matter of teaching boundaries and respect.

Take it seriously. Many yorkies have ended up in shelters because things didn't work out as planned. Good luck.

| My two do fine with little ones. I have a 5 year old daughter and her 3 yr old cousin is down at our house playing all the time. I am sure it will be an adjustment for her but she will do fine

| Our yorkie,Willy, was 4yrs old when we adopted our daughter. I was a little concerned how he would react to having a 1yr old around, but we have had NO problems. I know when we finally got home with her(we were away 17 days)he was so glad to see us that he couldn't kiss her or me enough, and I dont think he cared who we brought home as long as we were home. We only had one time I was concerned about them, Mandi was around 18mo and I came into the living room to find her, and she one hand around Willy's muzzle, the other hand on the other side of his muzzle with a nice big handful of hair, and she yanked him towards her to kiss him on the nose. My heart sank as I said , Willy be nice! Mandi be nice! He could have really hurt her, but chose not to. Willy really loves his little girl... |
