Tongue For those of you WITH LITTLE BOY YORKIES!!

So I've heard a lot about boys being harder to potty train than girls, what is your experience? My Coco was fairly easy, with accidents here and there for a while, but she wasn't naughty. She didn't pee/poo where she wasn't supposed to THAT often. I never had the problem of taking her out, and her going potty once we got inside. She's been really good.
So couple of things: Does your boy lift, even though he's neutered (what age was he neutered?) Was he or is he really hard to train? I would love to hear from those of you who have at least 1 of each sex, to be able to compare the sexes. I'm never sure if it's a gender issue or something people get lazy about training and blame it on the poor pup. I'd love some feedback on this, as I have been going back and forth over male or female.

Well, Nikko is a year old and he still has accidents inside the house. He is good about going outside but we haven't neutered him yet (I am such a chicken) so he lifts his little leg around the house. He is due for his boosters next week and I will be scheduling him for a neutering as it is getting annoying. At this point it may be too late but who knows. (Sorry for getting off track). Back to your question, I don't think boys are any harder than girls if you are patient and consistent with them. I have never had a girl but I can tell you boys tend to be more attached to their mommies and are really affectionate and cuddly.

I'm not sure if it's a gender thing as it is more of a dog personality thing - stubborness! Ruthie has been much more difficult to train than Oscar was - he caught on very quickly to the pee pads. Ruthie seems to do really well then I'll catch her peeing on the wood floor (never on carpets, always on the wood - she's a weirdo). NOTHING will stop her from peeing - you can call her name, tell her she's bad, clap your hands loud - nothing. You have to physically pick her up to get her to stop and when you take her to the pad she looks at you like "what?". And when you praise her for doing it in the right place it doesn't seem to help. Oscar was much more timid when I brought him home and he was scared of everything - all I would have to do is clap if I caught him peeing and he'd stop. He learned fast. He still has accidents, but he's still a pup and he's doing well. He lifts his leg to pee sometimes, just depends on how he's feeling I guess - he doesn't mark around the house though - he doesn't pee up against my furniture or anything.

I've always heard that a boy and a girl are the best combination for two together (natural chemistry). The next would be two males and last is two females. BUT, there are lots of people on here with multiple females whom I'm sure have had no problem and will attest to that - I think it really just depends on the dogs.

Ok, I probably have the BEST pair to use as a comparison because they are full brother and sister (from the exact same parents). First of all, we train to go outside...we've never used the pee pads and have never tried them. My boy Hobbs, he's the oldest, he was a BREEZE to potty train!!!! I think it has so much to do with the fact that he is so loving and very very eager to please. He is not stubborn at all! If he gets in trouble, he is very upset about it. We got him when he was 8 weeks old and he was 100% potty trained (runs to the door whenever he had to potty) by the time he was around 14 weeks old. He does not lift his leg to pee and he has never lifted his leg to pee. He squats to pee. He was neutered when he was 5.5 months old and he currently weighs 3 lbs and is 11 months old. We crate trained Hobbs, but he was never crated when we were at home. We just never let him out of our sight.

Now, my little girl, Hootie, she is also doing well with her potty training. But, she is just not catching on as quickly as Hobbs did. I think she gets that she is not supposed to pee in the house, but she always sneaks off to poop somewhere hidden. We are trying to break her of this by keeping a very close eye on her. Even though she does not pee in the house, she does not run to the door if she has to go...I just have to "guess" and take her outside if I think she has to go potty. Whenever she DOES get in trouble for pooping inside, it seems like she doesn't really care as much as Hobbs does when he gets in trouble. She seems more stubborn. Hootie is only 4 months old (almost) and 2 lbs., so she is still young. I have a really good feeling that she will have the hang of the whole thing very soon. Hootie stays crated when we are not at home and he has never gone potty in her crate. When we are at home, it is harder to keep an eye on her at all times because her and Hobbs like to run around the house playing. It was a lot easier to keep an eye on Hobbs 100% of the time because we only had 1 to keep up with then!

Misha our maltese was a breeze to potty train. She went on the potty paper right from the start. Hasn't had an accident since she was 4 months. Piper our other girl is 5 months. I'd give her 90/10 Sometimes for no reason she'll hunt for a spot to go. She hides sometimes & poos in the closet, behind her toy box etc. So when I do find it, and say LOUDLY who pottied here? Piper always takes off with her tail between her legs. So I think she knows, she just wants to hide it. So I bought a small tent & put it on the lanai & put potty pads in there. She's doing better, So maybe she is just modest. LOL

Are you thinking of getting a male yorkie? Chachi housetained earlier than Jewels. He was housetrained by 7 months. He only marks outside and occasionally he will at places like petsmart where he smells other male dogs. Never in the house. I think the whole key to keeping them from marking is to get them neutered as early as possible. I got Chachi neutered when he was 6 months old but now I wish I would have had it done even earlier then maybe he wouldnt spray at places like Petsmart. Even still he has only done it twice so that really isnt that bad.

I've only had one boy and he was extremely easy to potty train compared to the girls. Mine have a doggy door so they can go out to their own area when they want. K.C. is not neutered and, yes, he does pee on everything in sight outside, but DOES NOT mark in the house (honest). My 7 month old girl I still haven't been able to completely potty train even though I am home with her all day.

I do think it is more of a personality thing. I have a litter of 3 puppies right now, 2 boys and 1 girl that are almost 5 weeks. The littlest boy goes straight to the pad for pee or poo everytime, the other two are about 50/50 on the pad.

Yes, we are thinking around the beginning of the year. I want to get a male, because I feel it compliments females better. Plus I want a mommys boy since Coco is a daddys girl I just think boys are so cute but originally I just wanted a girl. I love my girl and don't want to bring another girl to overpower or dominate over Coco (Coco is so submissive). I think Coco is more daring and fun when boys are around. I have a couple of friends with boy yorkies and they are not that good with pottying (lifting legs, and not pottying in the right spots a lot of times). But I wasn't sure if that w as because of the owners or the gender. So I wanted to get a feel for that. I would get my boy neutered by 3-4 months, to avoid lifting the leg. I think by watching Coco he will probably learn as well. Do you think? Please keep the experiences coming, it's really helping me decide and learn.

I think you will be happy with a male. However My male is a daddys boy and my Female the mommys girl but from other posts I have read it is usually the other way around. Chachi and Jewels are inseperable and My Husband and I were talking that we are really gonna have a problem if something happens to the one because the other would probably grieve terribly. When I take them to the groomers Jewels barks when she sees Chachi in the crate and the groomers Husband has to take him out of the crate and hold him by Jewels while My groomer grooms her. I really think male female combinations are the best.

Nobella, I felt the EXACT same way about little boy dogs before I got Hobbs. I REALLY REALLY wanted a yorkie, but hubby told me that the only way he would get a yorkie was if we got a boy. I've never had a boy dog or been around boy dogs before so I was somewhat apprehensive. I was nervous about the whole lifting the leg thing, humping, "red rockets," ect. But all my feelings changed once I finally got my boy. He is the most loving, affectionate little man I've ever met! He is so cuddly and sweet. Like I said earlier, he squats to pee and always has, never got a "red rocket" after being neutered, tried to hump a little before we got him neutered but hasn't tried to hump anything since, ect. I have always heard that female yorkies LOVE you, but male yorkies are IN LOVE with you. This is DEFINATELY how my 2 are. I don't think you can find a better pet than a male yorkie that is neutered early. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Hootie, but she is just different from Hobbs, but not in a bad way. Does anyone else know what I mean?

Just wanted to add, if you couldn't already tell from my post, Hobbs is DEFINATELY a mama's boy...and Hootie is a daddy's girl.

YES this is my exact situation. Codie is IN LOVE with me ... he would do anything just to be near me. Tia loves me but she's IN LOVE with Jim -- she's just crazy about him.
