| bath time Hey! Im gettin a yorkie in a few days, and I was wondering, what kind of shapoo should I use on her? Can it be human shampoo, if it's really good stuff, or does it have to be doggie shampoo? And also should I use conditioner? Thanks! -Rory Last edited by Rory; 04-26-2005 at 02:14 PM. | I would suggest doggie shampoo. Many people swear by human shampoo but dogs have a different PH balance than humans so the stuff made for dogs is better for them, in my opinion.

| Oh gosh, don't use human shampoo! Like Aimee said, the difference in PH balance is really important. We use Fresh 'n Clean Tearless Puppy Shampoo, we bought it at PetSmart, recommended by our vet. It was like 7-8 dollars, but it lasts a long time, even if you bathe your dog often (we do!) Just be careful when you bathe them, they get dry skin/dandruff easily if you bathe them too often....but I know when they're puppies sometimes baths are emergencies, lol. I remember, crate trainig Sully, on man, lots off "oh gross, emergency bath!" times.

| I would think any quality puppy shampoo/conditioner would be great. The key is to rinse all the product off very well. As mentioned human products really are not the best but you will find what works best for you. Happy bathing!!

| We bought Vellus. They have a sample set you can buy to try it out. The morning mist spray is wonderful. It's hard to explain, very clean smelling not too perfumey http://www.vellus.com/catalog/vellus...2_products.htm

| I'm one of those humans who use Human shampoo on my dogs. I use baby Shampoo on them because when I used Dog Shampoo they would dry my hands so bad and make them itch, I wondered what it did to their skin (oreo had bad dry flakey skin when i used the dog shampoo).. And i do use human conditioner on them and it actually made their hair super soft, skin looked more moisturized and they smelled so good for a longer time than the regular dog shampoo. I guess it just depends on you personally. But It worked for me. But i found a really nice Shampoo and Conditioner made especially for dogs that i'm going to be trying out (it was recommended by another board member).. www.chrissystems.com I bought the Day to Day conditioner and shampoo and the Ice on Ice conditioner. I also bought Pro Glo conditioner spray which was also recommended by another board member, so hopefully those work. I can't wait to get them in the mail lol. |

| Overbathing?? How often is too often? I feel like I am always washing Tucker! He is 4 months old, but his face is always goopy and his unberbelly & bum are always so gross! I feel bad because his skin is starting to get dry and flaky, it seems like a lose/lose situation. Any suggestions?

I give Oreo and Ginger a bath every week. but sometimes they get too dirty i have to give them a bath twice a week, i don't think it's bad for them, their skin is still great and coat is fine and they're definately not getting sick from it. | |
