Default Meeting Other Yorkies in Public?

Probably once every couple of weeks, we meet another Yorkshire Terrier when we take Yoda out. While Yoda loves playing with big dogs (he thinks he's really a big dog himself!), it's always adorable to see him play with another Yorkie. Just last Saturday, we saw a girl Yorkie as we were driving down by the Pier and we also met a 2 month old baby girl Yorkie at Alki Beach here in Seattle. She was a feisty one and didn't want Yoda in her 'territory' too much. I always like to see Yorkies interact with each other and play.

Do your Yorkies get a chance to play with non-family Yorkies at all?

Otis is such a big 'fraidy cat.

When we take him for a walk and we run into any breed, including dogs that are smaller than him, he lays on the ground with his belly up and paws in the air, like he's playing dead.

I don't know why he does that. I guess he a really passive dog.

I've noticed that about several Yorkies, they will play dead or just lay on their back. Everyone gets a kick out of it when it happens. I remember hearing that they only do it when they feel safe? Not quite sure about that, but when they get scared, usually I've seen Yorkies run away, not just lay on their back.

I haven't seen Yoda do the 'lay on his back' thing with another Yorkie, only when I pounce on him (more like hover over him) or another big dog does similar. Yes, I heard that they lay on their back when they feel safe too krissey. I probably read it somewhere.

i took toby to the dog park once, there was one dog there that just WOULDNT leave him alone and it REALLY bothered him, he didnt lie down he got really defensive and fearful and the woman looks at me probably thinking "control your dog" when HER dog is the one that is causing the problem.... after that dog left he was fine with the others, he likes to play with any dog that will chase him.... he loves to be chased

Yeah sounds like Otis is a submissive dog. Nothing wrong with that and maybe safer for a yorkie to be that way!

Sheila isn't afraid of other dogs at all which scares me a bit. She will try to play with some of the other puppies at her daycare but they are seperated. Lol they let her out a lot (It's a daycare/pet supply) and she'll run around their ex pens to say "nah nah, I'm out!" lol. They do let her interact with some of the more mellow dogs in regular "adult" daycare and some of the non aggresive dogs that come in for grooming.

For the most part though she just ignores other dogs and prefers people. Anyone else have this? Mind you I'm talking about a yorkie that has been around lots of other dogs the whole 14 weeks she's been on this earth. SHe'll try and play with them on occasion but for the most part she could care less about other dogs. People though she loves meeting!

Default other yorkies...

i wish Porter got a chance to play w/ other yorkies more often. there is a female yorkie in the neighborhood and my dog tries to be friendly, sniff her, etc... she'll allow it for a while, but then she starts barking at him. confused, he walks away. lol! i guess she doesnt like him?? i've also taken him around other dogs and he runs right up to the biggest one! not afraid one bit....i guess he doesnt realize he's only 4 lbs. and lord knows how much they weigh. LOL!

Lucy does the lying on the back thing all of the time! It is so funny to see! We have LOADS of yorkies around by us, the ones we see most are Charlie and Teddy in our court, and then living near are Poppit, Rosie who is 15 and Daisy and Katie who are about 20 weeks (different owners). Besides that there are loads more that we see once or twice. Its amazing to watch yorkies play together, its like they know they are all the same. Lucy and I saw Daisy at the park today and they were all over eachother, chasing eachother and wrestling and then they got puffed out so they stopped with Daisy somehow draped over Lucy's head! They are a joy to watch and I could watch for hours, yet they only play like that within the breed! Strange!

My neighbor has 2 yorkies, male and female, the youngest is a female ,2 weeks younger than Bailey, and we have PLAY DATES every few days,, ( just to work off some energy, and give us a break) Anyhow, they have a GREAT time,, we say they are boyfriend and girlfriend! (both are fixed)
Its funny when they all play cause their names are all with B's ,, Bailey, Binx, and Bianca!!

Animal Smiley 036 All my friends have Yorkies

Besides having 2 Yorkies myself, one of each Artie & Abigail. Three neighbors in my Complex have Yorkies, 1 is a senior male @ 8 yrs. old, 1 is a male puppy @ 9 mos. and the last one is an evil 5 yr. old female.
We make appointments for our walk's together, depending on their schedules? I make it a point for Artie to play with them! Even though the first and last ones I mentioned are viscious and snap and bite at him. Since they have not been "Socialized" he just jumps and hops out of their way, because he is so determined to play with them.
He plays with all the big dogs at the Dog Park, but Yorkies have their own behaviour and language among them. I's so different to watch how they inter act. Plus my girlfriends all have Yorkies and if they don't, they are all trying to buy one!
