Default Veternarians and breeders alike.......

Have you noticed breeders and veterinaries are the same, some are in it for the money and others are in it for the LOVE of animals/dogs. I just feel sometimes I know more than the vet does (thanks to this site), so I changed vets and again the same thing. I'm going to have to change again or maybe I'm just being too picky with picking the right vet. I just want the best for my babies. I'v heard so many stories about vets screwing up. For instance, when they should only reccomend giving one shot at a time and they don't and our babies may have a reaction. Or like this other lady posted about her dog having an eye infection (I believe thats what it was) and the emergency vet totally over looked it and now her dog went untreated for two days, the poor thing could of went blind or something. We put our trust in them and SOME just don't really care it seems, they just want to make that buck and get home.

Sorry had to vent!!!

I don't think you're being picky. I think you have a right to "shop around" until you find a vet you're comfortable with. It's the same with doctors these days. There are some really great doctors, and there are some really horrible ones. Some are only in it for the money. It's actually quite difficult finding a dr. that you can trust anymore.

Good luck in finding a vet that you trust!

I know what you mean. The best way to maybe find a good vet for your Yorkie is to find a good show breeder in your area and find out where they go for their Vet services. You can bet a good breeder knows when a Vet is full of themselves and which ones are good.

VERY good point! My three skin sons all have a rare skin disorder (the only jackpot I've ever hit...) and I can't tell you how many times my husband and I have found ourselves in medical situations with the boys and we've known more than the treating doctors!

It all comes down to being the best advocate for your children (skin or fur) and always trusting your gut. If you have questions - ask - and ask again until you feel comfortable. If the vet/dr resents the questions - find a new one.

I agree with every response too. For us, choosing a vet is just as important (if not more important) than choosing our own doctors.

I went though 3 vets in our area and interviewed about 5 or 6 until I found 2 that I love and they love our babies. Both vets sent not only the "generic" condolence cards when Jewel died but Hand Wrote a long note about her. One doctor sent us a Pet Memorial Candle with a matching frame that has Jewel's name printed on the frame.

I trusted their opinions and honestly feel they want to do the best for the babies and not just pad their wallet.

The most important thing for me was to find a vet that was not "Cortizone Happy". I made appointment with the doctors without my fur baby to tour the facility and for me to interview them. The two questions I asked are:
1. Where do you stand on vaccinations? (too much, too little, just right?)
2. How would you treat chronic itching? (if they even utter cortizone, I was outta there!)

I have seen about 5 different vets in our area before I settled on the one we have now. I am a very anal/picky person, espcecially when it comes to the care of one of my kids (skin/fur). Too, sometimes it isn't what they do or charge, but that guy feeling you get about someone. I have turned around and walked out on one vet because I just honestly felt that he didn't care about my pet or my family at all, it was just another day at work for him and just another day of money. Another vet, would constantly ask about breeding Mojo, having friends that would be interested, etc.....that got on my nerves, and luckily, my numbers were never given out to her friends - I think if I had gotten a call, I would have be very upset! - That's just not right to give out private numbers....and Mojo's health seemed to be second to figuring out if we were going to breed him.

BUT, I have made myself not read into all the stories so much because I found half of them not the case (in my case) and I got all worked up for nothing. Now, I just read a story, casually ask my vet to check or if it needs to be checked and not freak out about it! (if that makes sense). I guess, before, I would hear about something, and Mojo would be having the same symptoms and I would go to the vet all paranoid about this major thing and it turns out it was nothing and I got so worked up and stressed over it. I guess, in the end, it is better to be safe than sorry...and luckily, my vet doesn't mind!

I'm pretty paranoid too and take Jazzie in for the smallest thing. But you never know especially since they can't tell you what's wrong.

It would be great if they can say "sorry mom, I ate a _____ I found on the floor and it made me throw-up" or "my tummy really hurts" or "I just realizied I can pretend limp!"

But since they can't - off to the vet we go!

I know exactly what you mean. My issue with my vet is that he doesn't discuss anything. Everytime I ask him a question his response is a little too short for me. Yesterday I took Nyx in for her final rounds of her puppy shots and he doesn't tell me what shots he's giving her and what possible reactions she might have. She came home yesterday and threw up, I was very upset. I am so not getting her spayed at his clinic. The way I see it is that I am a consumer and it is my job to visit other doctors and listen to their opinions about my pet's health. I need a vet who is willing to answer my questions not give me attitude. All the money that I spend or will possibly spend at that clinic that'sthe least he can do.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one that feels like this, I thought something was wrong with me. I guess I'm going to start my hunt for a new vet.

Thanks for all your responses it's good to know I'm not alone on how I feel.

You are SOOOO right. I have a WONDERFUL vet - you can read about his special caring ways in my thread about the loss of my schnauzer. He truly cares about his patients and as you will read, he is NOT in it for the money.
