| I would definitely not let them out of a fenced yard until they know to come when called. Too scary!!

| I had a hard time teaching Tatum "come" also until I went to training classes with her. We started out walking on a leash and making sure they stayed right beside us. When you do that exercise, you keep treats in your hand and give them one every few steps as long as they stay by your side. That took no time for her to catch on to. Then every few steps or so we were told to stop and let the dog get ahead of us then say "come". Right at first, it was necessary to give a little tug on the leash and kind of pull her back but every single time you did that, you gave a little treat. Honestly, it took no time at all for Tatum to grasp it and now she comes about 99% of the time I tell her to. The key here is treats, treats and more treats. When we were in class, I used a hamburger patty broken into teeny tiny pieces and every single time she was told to do something and she responded, she got a piece. The come command really needs to be started with the dog on a leash until they get the basics of it. Have you gone to any puppy/dog training classes? The most important part of these classes is for YOU to learn the correct way to teach your dog. Once you get the hang of it, you can train them to do other things. The only thing I was able to teach Tatum myself (before classes) was to sit. I learned so much valuable stuff at the classes though. Good luck!

| I'm sure all areas have different prices. Our class was sponsored through our town's Community Education program. This was just a trainer that offered to do the class for the program. I think it cost $60 for the 6 weeks. There's no way without a personal trainer working one-on-one with you and your dog that you can teach the dog everything you want to. What you're going to learn though in a group setting is the tricks of HOW to train your dog yourself. Like I said, I learned a lot from her and if I took the time, I know Tatum could learn a lot more also. In fact, this weekend I taught Tatum how to catch a little frisbie (one of those soft doggy ones) with just about 15 minutes worth of repetition. Usually our Aust. Shepherd is in the yard too and if you throw it she always wants to chase it but she was away working cattle with my husband so I got some one-on-one time with Tatum. Giving a treat every single time she made an attempt to catch it worked wonders! Basically, the trick is just for you to learn how to train them.

| Bree finally learned by being on a retractible leash. If I called her and she didn't come, I lightly tugged on it to get her attention. Now she just comes about 95% when I call her unless she sees the neighbor dog outside and she wants to sniff her through the fence. I hardley ever have to have her on a leash now. |
