My question is are they Inherited from their parents or just something that happens in Yorkees and U don't know they have it until it happens?? Can anyone tell me? I'm gonna post this in the health section on here too! | TRACHEA COLLAPSE There can be a weakness in the trachea and if it collapses the dog cannot breathe. Emergency surgery and inserting plastic devices or coils can be done in some cases to keep the dog alive. This can be caused by severe hacking from a cold or it can be a congenital thing. Symptoms -- A loud honking, dry cough. Gasping, unable to breath. http://www.shooterdog.com/alexfaq3.htm

| yes, my vet also said it was common with toy breeds. He also said it was hard to diagnose a collapsed trachea because it usually pops back to normal on it's own, and you pretty much have to have it happen in the vets where they can see the symptoms to diagnose it properly? Does this make sense?

| Yes, this is common in toy breeds. My sister has two yorkies (5 years old) and her female yorkie has a collapse trachea. Unfortunately, she is not a good candidate for surgery. She takes prednisone daily. She does well as long as she does not get excited. IF she gets too excited, she starts honking (like having an asthma attack). |

| It can be inherited or it can be the result of an injury

| Nooo....Absolutly not...It comes from parents, grandparents, it is a genetic defect...My lil Tiny man has it...Not form his parents or his grandparents, but from my local vet!!! Yea...Figure that 1 out!! ..I took Tiny in to get him fixed. He was 5 months old and they told me it would be OK! Well I sign all my forms and what not...I even cried when they took him from me to do the surgery! They were going to fix him and put his micro chip in so that I could have it done while he was asleep.!! Come to find out....When they tubed him...The tube was extreamlly tooooooo large! A vet tech must have put way to big a tube in him! So now..When he gets to coughing so bad that I can;t calm him down , I just get him a lil bit of Robatussin...He does OK...No medications or anything...I was told that he would be just fine...I may have problems later in life when he gets to be 10-15 years of age but for now...He will be ok...I'm in tears now..Because it just seems so unfair to Tiny...And there was nothing I could do to the vet..Because I had already signed all of the realese papers...and I hadn't had X-rays before the surgery only after when the damage was already done!! I actually paid..over $300.00 for everything..SAnd the only thing they did for Tiny was take away alot of his play time..He can't play rough now...Or play really hard...He stops in the middle of playing to a DEAD STOP to actaullly catch his breath . It's hard to see him go through this..But I know everything will be ok! |

| That's just horrible for Tiny. They shouldn't have charged you for their mistake that will cost poor Tiny his ability to play hard. |

| Well...They still claim to this day that they didn't do anything to him...But normally you are not supost to see any sign of it until they are 1 year old...But Tiny was 6 moths and only 1 month from having his surgery.! So...My breeder and I put 2 and 2 together and This is what I think! THEY DID IT!! THEY JUST WON'T ADMIT TO IT! My breeder actually gave me the full amount back on Tiny...Because she felt like she needed to because she knew that they were going to blame it on her and THEY DID!! Dawn...Is just awesome! I could have asked for a better breeder! |

She gave us pills called, "Torbutrol" (5 mg.). I had to buy a pill cutter as he takes only a half tablet. I don't give it to him unless he has an "attack". The medication seems to work miracles. I was told that it is common in many small breeds. | |
