| Two pups better than one? I’ve been playing with the thought of getting Ginger a playmate but I’m not sure it’s a good idea. I love her so much and feel like I got lucky with her, in that she turned out to be everything and more that I wanted in a Yorkie. I wouldn’t want another dog to get in the way of our relationship but I think she would be so much happier if she had someone her size to play with. I just had a few questions though, for all you with more than one Yorkie: I read once that they can kill each other if left alone . Seriously? Is it true the older one will teach the younger to go to the bathroom outside? How hard is it to take two dogs places with you, vs just the one? And most importantly, is it worth it? Thanks in advance for your input.

| i have three i have three yorkies and they haven't killed each other yet. LOL. I have never had to break up a fight. They play well together. I have two females and one male. i got the male first, then an older female. No problem. Then I got a baby female when he was about six months old and he was just a tiny little bit jealous of her being in my lap. My first dog, the little male has more or less trained the other two to potty on pee pads and outside. This is not to say they don't still have the occasional accident. The older one had been used to a dog run to the outside. The second day she started using the pad when she couldn't go outside. The baby just kind of picked it up from the other two. As far as taking them places, I rarely take mine anywhere because I live in a rural area and not many places to go and second, they all three get car sick and nervous. |

Now, to answer your questions from my experiences: At first you will really need to monitor the playing time of the new puppy and your older yorkie. ALso, when you are gone, you will need to confine the new puppy in an area that is not accessible to your older yorkie. I still keep my 2 separated while we're gone, but now they play pretty well together without too much supervision. Hobbs has been a tremendous help at showing Hootie not only how to go potty outside, but do other things as well. Sometimes it is hard to get a new puppy to eat...but whenever Hobbs eats, Hootie eats...whenever Hobbs goes potty outside, Hootie does, too. The second one is definately easier to train in all aspects bc the older one does help out. As far as taking both of them with you places, you really won't need to as much bc you won't feel guilty leaving them at home anymore bc they will keep each other company. When you do take both of them places, it really isn't hard bc they are so small anyway. You could train the puppy to ride in a crate when you're in the car...then you won't have to worry about both of them bounding around the car. Sorry my post is so long, but I felt that exact same way you do now before we got our 2nd one. If you have any questions for me about my experiences, please feel free to PM me! Someone once told me that yorkies are like Lays Potato Chips....you can't have just one!!! Now I know from experience that this is true! Go for it! Get your new puppy! But the main thing to remember is that when you get your new one, by all means don't neglect the older dog. You will have to show the older dog more attention and love than you ever have until he is used to the new puppy.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Quote:
That comment about yorkies going after each other ? I really think it's very rare On Potty training - that can go both ways - My oldest was quickly trained and her little sis took 10 months...she watched but didn't quite act on it. It's easy to take 2 places - just have strong arms if they both like to be carried.... it's SO worth it ! Here's a few pics to help you ! lol - it took about 4 months for them to start kissing each other and now they dont stop

| I had those same exact feelings, I didn't want Ollie to prefer the other puppy over me. Well, it just gave me more to love. The two play and play, I think they would be so lonely without each other. I would suggest to anyone who can afford it to get a second one, if you can't afford it, get your puppy kitten to play with. Especially impotant for people who are at work 8 to 10 hours at a time As they grow older, I believe it keeps them younger because they are more active than one alone would be. And I agree you do not have to take them as often because they are not alone. |
