| Chewing! My 3 month old yorkie loves to chew on my fingers , toes(which i can say HURTS!) and everything she possibly can! Is this because she is teething or what? what should i do? advice is much needed!

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I think it is mostly a puppy thing, Ruby did this at first, but lately seems to have stopped. I always offer her a toy to chew on instead of my fingers. Our trainer suggested "Bitter Apple" spray to put on anything you don't want chewed on . We have tried it and she didn't like it at all, but it was a hassle to spray on my fingers and be sure to wash off before eating anything. Playing with a toy instead of my hands is working best so far.

| Chewing a definately a puppy thing. What I do with mine is if they chew on something they aren't supposed to, I tell them NO and give them something that is acceptable to chew on. If they STILL don't stop chewing on what they aren't supposed to chew on, then I pop them with an empty paper towel roll. It doesn't hurt them, it just makes a noise and gets their attention. (I know some people may disagree with this, but it works for us.) Now all I have to do is show them the paper towel roll and they stop doing whatever it is they are doing. Works wonders for us! She will eventually grow out of it, but I know how big of a pain (literally) it can be with their sharp teeth! |

| I think biting fingers is like a game to teething puppies... My yorkie puppy keeps biting my fingers whenever I try to pet her! So, I tell her NO until she backs away and I give her a chew toy instead. Now before I try to pet her, I make a fist with my hands so she can't reach my fingers.

| Make sure you keep a close eye on her when she is chewing on that rope...Hobbs likes to tear the loose ends out and eat them That is the point when I take the rope away. Hopefully yours won't do that |

| So far as general chewing is concerned - it's been covered. Bitter Apple, chew toys, and watching closely. To paraphrase something I read recently - a yorkie that isn't pestering you to death is probably up to something you won't like. As to biting on fingers, etc. - that's gotta stop. It's cute when they're little puppies. For a very little while. The generally accepted training advice about puppies biting fingers, toes, etc. is to yelp as if you're hurt (sometimes there really isn't any pretense to that), push the puppy away, and ignore her for a few minutes. This is basically copying the behavior she got or would get from her littermates when she would get too aggressive with them. She'll get the idea. After working with Bailey for a while, it has become very rare for her to get carried away and nip at one of us in playing. When she does it now, we can just say "no bite" and she immediately starts licking like crazy, as if to apologize for the nip. |
