| Kitchen remodel - What type of floor to get? Hey All, The Mrs and I are looking to knock out out the wall between our kitchen and living room to open up the space a little, since we only have a small 1 bedroom coop in Queens. I don't know what the people that had the place before us were thinking when they got their floors, they're the worst! They're some sort of linoleum tile that has little holes all over each of them, making it hard to clean in the best of circumstances. Well, since getting little Guinness a few months back, its only become more and more of a challenge being able to clean properly. Heck, the floor is so bad that we often can't really tell whether its truely clean or not! This all leads into my next question... since the kitchen would likely be our little guy's space going forward after a remodel, what would be the best floor for a dog in the kitchen... Tile? Linoleum? Something else? I'm sure it wouldn't be wood. I know tile is the highest end floor but I'd worry that the grout might either erode or become very dirty after Guinness does his business too many times on the floor. To add to how much our current floor sucks, tiles have started to come apart/break/curl upward since we've gotten Guinness. I'm assuming its him scratching at the floor combined with the acidity of his pee. Has anyone else experienced this with their floor? I guess what I'm looking for is an easy to clean and rugged floor that can resist a beating from our little guy... suggestions? |

| How about wood laminate? It's not as pricey as real wood, doesn't scratch like real wood and cleans up very nicely. I have real wood in my kitchen...beautiful, but wouldn't do it again, it scratches too easily. I have wood laminate in my downstairs and my dining room...looks like real wood, but doesn't scratch. It is louder than the real wood. I have had tile too and you seal the grout, so cleaning shouldn't really be an issue (but get dark grout, not light). Tile also can be loud (echoey). I hate linoleum, but I hear there is new kinds out that are easier to keep clean. I prefer the wood laminate over everything I have put down in the past. If you have an Ikea near you, they have the least expensive wood laminate I have found, or Costco has good prices too.

| Our house came with marble tile in the kitchen and bathrooms and carpeting everywhere else. I've gotten rid of the carpeting everywhere except the bedrooms and replaced it with ceramic tile. I hate the marble tile and would love to get rid of it if it wasn't so expensive to do so. There's practically no grout involved with marble, but it's hard to clean and it cracks easily. It looked awesome when it was new but it's not so great-looking now. I have two different kinds of ceramic tile. The tile in the living room and family room, etc. is more of a matte finish -- not shiny. It's great because it doesn't show stains and it cleans fairly easily. It's like a beige swirl with a hint of burnt orange and they tinted the grout burnt orange to pick up that color. They can tint grout any color you want. You definitely want that done because it doesn't show stains or discolorations. I got shiny ceramic tile in my dressing area and walk-in closet, though, when I had a plumbing problem that ruined my carpet there. It's my FAVORITE! It cost more, but it's even easier to clean than the other ceramic tile. It looks like porcelain but it was a lot cheaper than porcelain tile. I have light brown grout with that tile and it looks really great! Tile has come down in price a lot. It's the installation that can be pricey. If you're interested in tile, definitely find a private person who will install it. Home Depot and those places charge an incredible amount of money to install and they expect you to rip up whatever is there and prepare the surface for them before they come. Otherwise, my matte ceramic tile cost just 99 cents per square foot and the shiny tile cost $1.49 for the 13X13 tile. Julie |

| i started a great thread about this back in early march if you can find it. I believe it was under "laminated wood". Anyhow, we were leaning toward laminated wood or ceramic tile. For all the reasons that people brought out in that thread about the real wood and laminated wood buckling and the price of the ceramic tile, I ended up with a VERY high quality linoleum/congoleum. It looks like dark cherry wood and is wonderful. I love it and planning on having my kitchen done the same way. My yorkies are in what used to be my formal living room so this is where I put it. The rest of my house except thee kitchen is carpeted. Another word about the ceramic tile, besides being very expensive to do a room of any size, it is very dangerous for your yorkiees if they jump off a table or chair or something. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | We redid the kitchen in this house in Tile and I LOVE it - it can be sealed and it's really easy to clean - you can add area rugs and jazz it up but we chose Inserts...the inserts are Marble and do require a little polishing but it's REALLY pretty - this is a before and after of my kitchen...work was still in progress but you get the idea |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I can't wait to get rid of our carpet (next project). I've seen some slate tiles, darker in color, muted colors, with a slight roughness to it's surface. They seem like they might be more prone to breaking, but softer than ceramic tiles, (for falling yorkies), and the surface wouldn't be slick when wet. Has anyone used these? Villette,I do like the accent tiles you used in your kitchen. Remodeling is sooo fun

| We put wood laminate in the kitchen and it's great. Matter of fact, the living room and hall way are getting the carpet removed and the same put down this weekend. You have to get the good quality laminate, don't get the cheap stuff, it will buckle. Here's a pic of Petey standing on the laminate floor and the pups resting on it. Kim

| I am ALL ABOUT a good vinyl in the kitchen . WE have tried tiles and wood laminates and also real wood. ALL were bust for me. YES you can seal them all but who wants to keep resealing???? If you are Constantly scrubbing you HAve TO REMEMBER TO RESEAL OR YOU RUN INTO TROUBLE. And although it is HARD to find nowadays because the ....UMMM i can't think what word I want to use....you know the natural unpolished look ... is IN right now, but I searched until I found a high gloss Vinyl and I LOVE it. It not on;y cleans up easier but the high gloss brightens up a smaller area SO WELL
