| My yorkie puppy's coat is so dry! What's up with that?!?! I have a male yorkie, just over 5 months old. His coat seems very dry, not at all silky and shiny, and it seems to be growing very slowly. He gets plenty of water and I feed him NutroMax puppy food, so I don't think it's any sort of nutritional deficiency. I just spent a small fortune on a bunch of high-end puppy grooming products, specially formulated for hydrating dry coats. Unfortunately, even that made little to no difference. I grew up with a yorkie as our family pet, and he had a silky coat. I don't remember what his puppy coat was like. I've also owned one other yorkie of my own, and he had a soft coat. But I remember his coat also seemed sort of dry as a puppy, but it grew fast and then became much less dry. So what I'm wondering is this....is it common for a yorkie puppy's coat to be dry or is he going to have the wiry coat that I just read about in the thread about coats, posted at the start of this forum? I'm so happy to have found this site - I have lots of questions! (But I'll post them in different threads!) ) Thanks! Anna |

| I can't answer your q, but would like to hear from someone who can. Hubby and I were discussing today about the fact that Gypsy's hair seemed dry and does not seem to be growing very fast.

| I used Petsilk on Buttercup and his skin was extremely dry and it made little to no difference whether I switched shampoos or not. Come to find out, I was leaving shampoo on his skin and that's what caused the dry skin. I'm not an expert but I think it may or may not be the product you are using. Who knows? Maybe someone else who knows more will be able to answer your question |

| skin isn't dry, just his coat Just wanted to clarify - it's my puppy's coat that is dry. I don't think his skin is at all dry. He doesn't itch or flake or anything else that would indicate dry skin. It's definitely just his actual coat that is dry - it looks dry and feels dry to the touch, not soft. Just wanted to make sure I made that distiniction. Hopefully someone here knows about or has experience with this problem and could pass on some insight - thanks! |

| is he a silk coat or a modified? Silk with have a natural shine where modified will be lusterless. Since he is still a puppy it could merely be the transition of the puppy coat to adult. BTW welcome to YT

| You might just try using your favorite dog shampoo and following up with Suave Naturals Conditioner Tropical Coconut. This was suggested to me a while ago on this forum. I use it for both of my Yorkies and it works great. |

| Silky or modified? Hmmm...I'm not sure. I've not heard that terminology before. He doesn't seem silky though - that's for sure! I've tried the Coat Handlers brand shampoo and conditioner and I also recently purchased several Plush Puppy products -the shampoo, conditioner, and swish creme, all are supposed to help hydrate a dry coat. I've even tried some of my own Silk Therapy on him. Nothing has helped! I'll check to see if his food has fatty acids. Hopefully he is just transitioning to an adult coat, but, because it doesn't seem to have grown much, I'm really beginning to think he has a wiry coat. If anyone has tips on how to take care of a yorkie wiry coat, please let me know. It would also really help if you could post some pics, so I have an idea of what to expect his adult coat to look like. Thanks! |

| My Romi is almost 2 years old and has a nice coat, and can grow long but is dry as well. Its like a ... fluffy frizzy dry. He atually is part Maltese, but I read they have a silky coat too. I do shampoo and condition and rinse very well. Its dull and has no shine. I read on another post that it could just be genetics. but if it could be something else, I would love to hear it. He is also on a good diet of high quality food (Wellness) and as a treat I give him a little grease on the bottom of his bowl with the food once a day. Also while I am thinking about it, how much food should a 6 pound dog get a day. The bag gives ranges but they range from like 3 pounts to 12 pounds, 1/4 cup to 1 cup. Some days he seems to eat all day and others he doesn't finish what I give him. I average about 1/4 cup, twice a day. what do you think? Thanks |

| I think the dry coat is probably just genetics. I would think if the dry coat was a condition of some deficiency, he would probably have dry skin as well. Huck's dry puppy coat eventually transitioned to a nicer adult coat. It's still not what would traditionally be thought of as a true silky coat, but it's a nice coat - doesn't tangle much and straight. Also, I use Pantene conditioner on him and BioSilk Silk Therapy as well, just to add more softness and shine. Huck is about 5 lbs. and I feed him a huge, heaping 1/3 cup once a day. Huck is pretty mellow and laid back - not especially active - so, obviously, he doesn't require and shouldn't be eating as much food as a larger and/or more active dog. My vet's advice was this: Some dogs will eat everything you put in front of them, so don't feed him based on his "appetite". Judge his needed food intake by his weight. If he's too skinny (ribs significantly protruding), you should feed him a little more. If he's too heavy (big round belly), feed him less. |

| I have no idea on the coat. I have heard someone on here use a hot oil treatment on their dog's coat with good results. As far as feeding goes...I put my boys' bowl down for 10 minutes twice a day. Sometimes they eat a lot and sometimes they are done after 5 minutes. MOST of the time, the don't even make it to 10 minutes and they are both a very healthy weight. |

| My Luna is just over 5 months and has the worst coat. It was very dry, brittle, almost wiry and did not lay nicely. Well the vet shaved her neck to draw blood a week ago and hte hair growing in there is super soft. So I wondered if she just has pretty much ruined her coat doing puppy things like rolling in the grass etc? I took maybe an inch off her body hair and it now lays nice, is soft and has the silky feel. I haven't yet figured out how to get her to hold still for the legs lol but they need to be done. The difference is amazing.

| i'm just going to guess i might just be the puppy coat. is the head fall as dry as the back seems to be??? Sadie's head fall is soft and silky which makes me think she'll be a silky. her puppy fur/fuzz is thick, black, and drier and it's very patchy as her other hair is growing in. a nice trim might get rid of the puppy fur and let the silky come through when the pup is old enough. i wouldn't worry until they are full grown and then you will still see some changes over the next few months in their coat. |
