| floppy ears considering purchasing a yorkie pup but the ears are not erect at 6 wks. Will they eventually stand up or do they have to be trained? Also, why is it recommended that you wait 8 wk to 3 month before bringing one home? Thanks for any input. New Yorkie to be owner. Cathy In MI |

Hi Cathy, Welcome to YorkieTalk. It takes a while before the ears stand up on their own. If the puppy is only 6 weeks it is still very young. Also There is still a lot of learning that the pup should get from it's parents and litter mates and it's best that he/she stays with them to get it. I also live in Redford, MI, but will be relocating to Illinois next month. But here to stay at YT. Congrats on your new baby!

| Another reason to wait is the pups immunity is still developing, don't want to expose it to new germs too early. Also, the new baby needs time to socialize with his littermates, to learn how to get along with others. 12 weeks is also the time that the feedings can cut back from 4 per day to 3, making caring for the little one a bit easier. He is also more amenable to potty training as he gets a bit older. This is from what I have read so take it with a grain of salt. My breeder said I could probably bring mine home at 8 weeks, but I would rather wait until 10-12 weeks. Being a new Yorkie mom, I need all the yelp I can get! I can tell you that I brought my last kitten home at 8 weeks. His cat mommy had a fungal infection and he had to be isolated. He needed me more than he needed to stay with his cat mommy. He immediately developed a fungal skin infection himself and has had many allergies that we have contended with. The vet said it was because his immune system was not developed enough at 8 weeks and he should not have left his cat mommy so soon. |

Peeka Boo I See You! Donating Member | I think it all depends on the pup my peeka & boo are 7 weeks and they are doing great! good on potty training and eating. well as for the ears they are just now starting to go up and they are still a little floppy on the ends. You will read a lot on here about when they are teething or have shots or are stressed thier ears will flop and at 6 weeks thier teeth are coming in so i wouldn't worry to much about it. 6 weeks is early to bring them home though they are right about needing to be with momma my babies have to be together or they need my constant attention so if you bring one home that early you need to plan to be by thier side 24-7 because they need someone to comfort them. Besides it's not worth risking the health of the puppy if it won't eat or gets to stressed from leaving it's momma too soon. Good luck

| I brought my puppies home, one at 7 weeks and one at 8 weeks, and neither of their ears were standing up when I brought them home. For both of them, their ears were completely up around 9 weeks. However, my parents' yorkie's ears NEVER stood up and neither did my grandmother's yorkie. My sister's yorkie has one ear up and one down. So, it really depends on the dog whether its ears will stand up or not. We brought our yorkies home early (before 12 weeks) bc we have a lot of experience with yorkie puppies and we were able to be at home with them 24/7. Yorkie puppies are highly susceptible to hypoglocemia...you have to monitor them very closely the first couple of weeks you have them to make sure they are eating well and regularly, they are getting enough sleep, and that they are staying warm. The longer you wait to bring them home, the less likely they are to have a hypoglocemic attack. In my opinion, 12 weeks is the optimal age to bring a yorkie puppy home. Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Can't wait to see pics of your new puppy. |

| My first yorkie's ears never went up. But I didn't work at getting them up. My husband think he would have looked better with em up since he is a bigger yorkie. But my 12 week old had her ears up when I bought her at 10 1/2 weeks old.
