| Run of the house? How old? My boys are 6 and 7 months right now and I'm wondering when/if any of you havelet your dogs have run of the house. They are pretty well potty trained with only a few accidents that only happen when we aren't paying attention, but I don't think they will be able to hold it on their own until I get home...I'd like them to eventually have the run of the house, but I wasn't sure how to do it or what to expect. We may be moving to LA in the next few months and I'm worried that I won't be able to make it home for lunch every day too...which means that they will only be let out in the morning and right after work. I feel bad leaving them in their crates that long, but like I said, I doubt right now that they will be able to hold it all day. Suggestions? |

| Pups like children I guess are all different. I have a 2yr old male. He was trained at 5months, fully. Lucky I guess. I left him double gated in the kitchen until he was 1yr. (he jumped over one gate) I left him in the house alone at one. He never had an accident but ate the corners off my throw rugs throughout the house. This went on until he was about 1 1/2. Now nothing. He sleeps all day and does not touch anything. I prayed for this day for 1 1/2 yrs. It finally came. |

| We have a fairly small house but Tila has always pretty much had the run of the house, except the bedrooms she can go in the living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom (that's where she GOES potty ha ha), and the hallways. I think that's easiest for us because we didn't want her locked up and she knows only to go to the bathroom where the paper is and she's 6 months sometimes she has accidents, but oh well! |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Lex will be eight months in another week and a half. He has had run of the first floor of the house since he was very small. He will go on a wee wee pad that is left out if my husband and daughters neglect his needs during the day while I am at work. I have yet to allow him upstairs unless he has a totally empty bladder being as it's carpeted. He is so not allowed in the basement because the support pillars he seems to think are his very own indoor hydrants. Hope that helps.

| Sissy has full run of the house when I'm home (which is a lot). Since I spend a lot of time in the upstairs office where the computer is, when she is upstairs she stays there cause she won't go downstairs. I do put her in her the downstairs bathroom when I leave the house, but occasionally I'll leave her out if I'm gone only a short time. If she is on the 1st floor, she will usually curl up on the pillow of the couch in front of the arm so she can look out the window. She usually does pretty good (she is almost 11 months old).

| Mine have run of the house when I'm home. I know to worry when they get quiet. But I crate them during the day though (let them out at lunch) and i'm worried about having to do it for a full day. Does anyone let them have run of the house when they are away? And if so how did you make the transition? |

| Georgie has had the run of the house since he was 4 months, we have another dog a Boxer and she is older so I didn't think it was too fair to lock him up, but I am a softy anyways He has done great we suspect he goes up and lays on the bed with Coco while we are gone because there has never been a mess when we get back.

| Pixie will be a year old the end of next month and I just started giving her the run of the house. She's been housebroken for a few months now, but I felt she was safer being confined when we weren't home. You never know what these little guys can get into... But, so far so good! I haven't come home to a mess yet! |

| I was blessed with Brownie who was wee wee pad trained from 16 weeks and she had full run of the house since then. She would have the odd accident once in a while, but she was pretty consistant with the wee wee pads. It also depends on how comfortable with you leaving your pup with all the freedom.

| At around 8 months I started letting Roxie have more and more freedom when I left the house. Before that she would be left in the crate when we weren't home. I live in a two story and do use a baby gate so she could not have access to the upstairs. She never goes in the living room, dinning room or guest rooms that are downstairs anyway. She stays mainly in the family room and kitchen area. I started out leaving her out for short trips. First I would go to the store and then tried leaving her out when we went to the movies. As long as she did well, I extended the time. Now I leave her out always. Her crate is left open with her blankets and she will normally sleep there all day ( if you let her) or until someone come home to let her outside or to play with. She is only trained to go outside and not in my house. I feel fortunate that I have a college student who comes home between classes-plus my husband works the night shift and does not go to bed until around 1:00pm so she has people popping in and out all day. Plus I work from 5:30am to 1:30pm and I am home by 2:00pm. She has done just fine on her own now for up to 5 hours which is the longest we have left her alone during the day. I figure if she can hold it all night 10:30pm to 8:00am ( we have to wake her up sometimes and make her go out ) she can hold it during the day too.
