| amount of time in a crate?? Bailey is 10 months old,,, the longest he has been in a crate is 4 hours,, , I sometimes run a little late,,, (work). He has NEVER gone in his crate,, but I wonder what is the longest any of you have left yours in a crate? My neighbors dog makes it for 8 hours!! I think thats too long, but I just wondered what the average time is?

| 8 hours in a crate is way too long, imo. Bailey's been in his crate during the day, for 2 hours max and during the night, 6 hours max. |

| I once left Esme in her crate for 4 hours. We were visiting my mom, and my mom and I went out, so I put her in her crate at my mom's house. I felt pretty awful the whole time. Now, at night, she has been in her crate for up to 8 hours. This is while she was sleeping though. As soon as she woke up and needed to go potty she would bang on the door and I would let her out. Now that Esme is a big girl, and sleeps in her own bed, we no longer use the crate unless we are riding in the car alone and I am driving. Usually car rides are only 10-15 minutes to my moms, vets, groomers.

| I think the longest i've left Kelsey is 4 hours. Maybe 6 the most. But she has never went potty in her crate. She is sooo good at holding it. Everytime before she goes in her crate i'll put her on the puppy pads or outside and she'll go potty and then i dont feel so bad when im gone, and then i'll let her out immediatley when i get home. Works well for me. |

| WOW!! 6-8 hours is a very long time. Imagine if you had to go really bad and you had to hold it for that long. I would feel sooo bad. Louie is in his crate only at night and sometimes during the day when he has been running around playing and has not knapped and I know he needs to knap, I'll put him in his crate. I know that most people that work do leave their babies in a crate (only when they are being potty trained) after that, they gate an area in their home or buy a play pen and put food, wee wee pads, and crate and toys in there. I would recommend a dog walker if your baby is going to have to be alone for a while. I just don't feel right about leaving a poor little baby in a crate for more than 4 hours unless it's at night and he's sleeping. The play pen works wonders!!!

| i put toby in his crate when we go to work and when we go to bed...... during the day he is only in his crate for about 8 hours(sometimes a ltitle longer, sometimes a little shorter) and the night is flexable, but so far he sleeps through the night without waking us up, if he needs to go potty he will "ask" to get out I respect everyone elses opinions about taht being too long, but we are very careful and make sure he goes potty right before he goes in, and right after he gets out of his crate..... i would not suggest doing this to a young puppy, but we worked up to 8 hours gradually, we didnt do it all at once. . . he is 7 months old. the only reason he goes into his crate at night is because he was back to making messes on the carpet so, he gets to sleep in his "bat cave" i think im more depressed about it then he is, he is always such a good snugglebug at night |

| When gracie was a 3-5 months I would always make sure she was only in her crate 2 hours or so I just didnt feel right leaving her in there. I knew that when I was home she was going out to potty about every 2 hours sometimes sooner than that she I knew that until she got bigger that 2 hours was the max in her crate. Now she is 7 months and she does well will pottying so she is gated in my spare room when I am gone and she does well for about 4-5 hours. I guess every dog varies. I think if you gradually work with your puppy or dog they will adjust to just about any schedule. I dont of course recommend an 8 hour day in a crate right off hand....or never really but if its necassary I say its your dog I wouldnt feel good about that.

| Okay Sydnee is spoiled I will admit it, She has been her crate the longest maybe a half hour and that was so I could shampoo the family room. Plus she has her own bed but she prefers mine. So I let her sleep with me and usually wake up with her licking my face, today it was sweet though. She was patting my face for me to wake up with her little paw and doing it so gently. Of course I just fell in love with her all over again.

| Tinkerbell does very well in her crate. At night I put her to bed at 9 and she wakes up about 7a.m. Then I leave her while I take kids to school or run errands, often I'm away 4-5 hours. She has never had an accident in her crate. Quite frankly if i'm home during that time, she kind of just lays around and naps anyway. Then she's on the go for the rest of the day. I think 4-6 hours is ok, but 8 is quite long. I would want to set up a play pen with pee pad and food and water for that long. |

| I have Pebbles in the bathroom with her wee wee pad and water bowl, she also has her cage in there where she sleeps, she will do her pee pee on the pad but the poo poo she will do somewhere else. She is in there for 8 hours as we work. For at night, I will put her in there same situation at 10 and she wakes up around 6. I just need to train her to go on her wee wee pads when I let her out in the afternoon and until bedtime. |

| My dogs dont have crates they have houses LOL. My Annabelle stays in heers for 6-8 hrs depending onthe day. We worked up to this though. She as food water and toys. She actually goes to her bed when she doesn't want people to bother her. You could fit a lab in her crate, and a great dane in or other pets beds. When they are pups they will have to go to the bathroom morefrequently, but as they get older that improves. Their crate is a safe place for them and to them. If your using a crate use a big one.

| Starsky is only 10 weeks and he is in his condo (I call it) It's about the size for a medium size dog, for about 4 hours in the morn, I come home for lunch for and hour and then he maybe in there another 3 to 4 hours until me or my daughter comes home. We play with him all evening and he poops out about 9:00. He has never messed in his condo at all. He is such a good boy about that. I rarely get poops on the floor too. We watch him a lot. Still working on the peeing part.
