| [News] Yorkie Saves Parents From Fire! Such a warming story from the UK! Yorkies are so smart! --- An elderly couple, whose property was attacked by arsonists, have hailed their pet dog a hero after she woke them and alerted them to the blaze. On Monday night, Bernard Towl (74) and his 82-year-old wife Gwendoline's Rivelin Place home became the latest property to be attacked by arsonists in the Lincoln Gardens area of Scunthorpe. While Mr and Mrs Towl slept in their bedroom, their wheelie-bin was set on fire and pushed up against the rear of their bungalow. The couple's Yorkshire Terrier, Tiggy, was curled up in her basket when she detected the fire, and ran and woke her owners by barking wildly. Mr Towl said the flames spread to the back door of his home, and smoke had started to pour into their house. "We were in bed fast asleep and Tiggy went wild," he said. "I looked out of the bedroom window and I did not see anything. But when I got to the back door it was on fire. "Smoke was coming into the house and it was really strong. I knew we had to get out of the house immediately. I rushed back to my wife, who was still in bed, to get her out. "The frightening thought is, I don't know what would have happened if Tiggy hadn't woken us up," added Mr Towl. "I just can't understand why people would do such a thing. It can't be human." The fire was just yards away from their bedroom. Firefighters from Humberside Fire and Rescue were called to the property and Humberside Police have confirmed an investigation into the incident is now being carried out. Officers are now urging anyone with any information about the fire to contact them. "We are treating this as suspicious and we would urge anyone with any information about this incident to contact the police with any information," said a force spokeswoman. This latest incident is in addition to the 120 arson attacks in the Lincoln Gardens area since 2003, as confirmed by Lincoln Gardens ward councillor Tony Gosling. And a fire service spokesman confirmed there had been about 39 arson attacks in the whole of North Lincolnshire during March this year. The attack on Mr and Mrs Towl's home happened just before 11pm on bank holiday Monday. The couple had been asleep for two hours prior to the incident. Mrs Towl, who has high blood pressure, arthritis and has to use a walking stick to aid her mobility, said she had been left shaken by the incident. "I could not control my nerves. I did not go back to sleep that night as I was frightened to death," she said. "I feel a little better than I did, but I will never get over it." Yesterday the couple praised their beloved pet for raising the alarm. "She is our little hero," said Mrs Towl. Coun Nic Dakin, leader of the Labour group in North Lincolnshire and a ward councillor for the Lincoln Gardens area, said: "It is very concerning these incidents are still occurring. Anybody with any information which can be of help to this investigation should get in touch with the police at the earliest opportunity. "Local councillors are continuing to work hard to support the fire brigade and the police in their considerable efforts to try to put a stop to these incidents. "The potential of these incidents could have very serious consequences." http://www.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk/di...entPK=10869833 |
