| Is it ok to restrict water? Oh boy is it hot in NYC!! This week we have officially welcomed the summer by posting degrees in the high 80's all week, not to mention the humidity (yes girls, it means bad hair days all week ). I usually leave water out for Nikko all day, and because it is so warm, I have started adding a few ice cubes in his bowl which he totally loves. The problem is, because it is so warm he is gulping more water than usual which means he's peeing a lot more too!! He likes to mark my house and lately he has a lot more water in his pistol My question is is it ok to restrict his water? I don't want to parch him but he is peeing too much. Belly bands don't work because he fusses and bites at them. What do I do?

| I would be a little nervous restricting water, with the weather we have been having here....I have been putting ice cubes in the water bowls to keep them cool too. Horrible weather this week....hopefully it will break soon |

| Someone once suggested in the morning just putting a few ice cubes in a bowl. When they melt, there is a little water there that Nikko can drink. This would probably help him not drink SO much water! My uncle is a vet and when we were crate training Hobbs, he said it was fine to restrict water. So, I dunno |

| no, i really don't think that you should restrict water. I worry about leaving my baby home in the heat but I feel like he prefers the heat more than the cool temp. I leave 2 bowls of water with ice cubes for him one upstairs and one downstairs along with a fan on each floor because it is REALLY hot and humid this week. Let him drink so that he dosen't get dehydrated or get a heat stroke.

| I know i would be scared to restrict my Rocky of water i also put the ice cubes and he loves it. His little beard is alway dripping wet because he loves to lick the ice. He also pees alot but thank god he does it on his wee wee pad so i dont worry about him doing it all over the place. |

| I guess I am in the minority. We have an air conditioned house and I don't give Gracie water while we are gone. She is in her carrier and does just fine. |

| Thank you all for your responses. I think I will just continue to leave him water with ice. I would hate for something to happen to him because of the heat. In the meantime, I guess my mop will get lots of use

| I leave fresh cold water all day and night long. I change the water in the morning, then hubby changes it when he comes home to check on the babies during his lunch break, I change it when I get home from work and then I change it one last time before I go to bed at night. I also leave the air conditioner and fan on all day while I'm at work and the weather is hot and humid. Man oh man do I have some expensive bill during June, July and August.

| Oh my if it's one thing I miss about Jersey it's the weather. I remember when high 80's meant it was steaming outside. Here in TX it's over 90 from April til about October. *sighs* I don't think your dog is as hot as you think he is but I would still leave the water out. I don't think the ice cubes are necessary but he probably enjoys playing with them. If you want him to stop peeing everywhere crate him and attach the water bottle to his crate.

| I think he needs the water. I have a recyling water bowl for my tribe--Holly and 3 cats-so they don't run out during the day and it keeps the water fresh. I would restrict his area while you are out-a gate to keep him in the kitchen? Or an ex-pen. Then the mess is contained. Good luck.

| I'ts 93 here and I have water out upstairs and downstairs. When they need to pee they run for the wee wee pad. I also have the air on and the fan they love laying in front of the fan, a lot of brushing to do before night time. I don't want them to want water and not have any. |

| OMG, I cannot imagine restricting water in this weather for animals or humans. I would do something else though if you want to cut back a little on the amount......put the water bowl about 3/4 full in the freezer the night before. Then, set it in a plate or other flat container (to catch the condensation) when you leave in the morning. Leave another bowl as usual with water and ice cubes.... To me that sounds like a better idea than restricting but that IJMO..... Dehydration is worse than peeing, again IMO.... |
