| No petting please Jack will be 6 months old tomorrow, and there are a three things that I need to know from the "experts". First when we reach out to pet him he backs off. I don't know if it is because he thinks we are going to make him do something he doesn't like (like grooming) or if it is just normal. He is very loving otherwise, cuddles in bed, and likes to be carried. The other thing is he won't come when I say "come", I have been working on it since he was 8 weeks old, he fetches, sits, stays, is doing great on his potty training, but he won't come. I have used treats, and that works but not otherwise, I am afraid that if he ever got out that we wouldn't be able to catch him, he is like a bullet. The "delicate" problem is that he keeps (for want of a better word,) getting excited on one of his toys. It sometimes gets to be a problem and he can't walk for awhile (if you know what I mean). Is this normal, or do I have an oversexed 6 month old. |

| Sounds just like my Caesar...He turned 6 mo old April 15th. He only does THAT with one toy..his octupus. He too will not come when called. He did get out of the garage last week and by the time I caught him he was 6 houses down. The closer I got to him the further he would go. He finally stopped when he found another dog. Thank goodness the mom of that dog was home in the front yard with it. I just make sure he doesn't get out cause I know he will run. I was suppose to get him neutered Monday the 11th and chickend out. When I get back from visiting home I will be making an appointment. He does the thing about when you try to pet or pick him up. Now if he wants you to pick him up it is a different story. I think it is cause their hormones are coming in now. They say they start coming in at 6 mo. Sorry no advice to give but thought I would let you know you are not alone. |

| We are certainly not experts, but Patrick & I had that same problem with our little girl, Toto! We discovered that if we put our hand towards her chin/chest area rather than towards the top of her head/neck that she was OK with that and gradually she allowed us to put our hand over her head. She still won't "come"! She is very stubborn ... but the running problem was much harder. We even had a trainer come to our home to work with her. The only way we can get her to stop is a very, very stern "Stay!!" At that she will drop in her tracks! We hate using that tone of voice with her but it's the only thing that works for us. It's very frustrating when they run like that and sometimes for their own safety we have to use methods we don't like ... loud, angry voices are extremely upsetting for her because she doesn't hear it in our home. As for the "delicate" problem you have with your little Jack ... thank God we haven't encountered this with Toto [she is 21 months]!! There are many experienced people on this forum who can probably give you some very good advice. Welcome, and looking forward to seeing pictures and hearing all about your baby!!

| Hey! Tomorrow's Pita's 6 month birthday too! She's not so fond of hands coming right at her either, we usually just don't come straight at her. I break up tiny marshmallows and just call her randomly throughout the house and when she comes she gets the treat. If she thinks we are having a "training session" she won't do it but if it's just a matter of course she's ok. |

| Far from an expert (I'm just a first time yorkie owner!), but my little Zoey is similar. She doesn't back away when we try to touch her, but sometimes, she will back up when others try to touch her...even other people that she knows well! She is also very very stubborn. She will usually come if I use my stern, I'm-not-playing-and-may-get-mad-soon voice. But, my goodness, if she sees a squirrel or a rabbit, she doesn't hear anything! Now, Zoey is a girl, but somehow, she has the same "delicate" problem...she has one particular toy dog...it has slowed down over the years (she's 3years), but when she's bored, she'll still go at it! |

| Try this and see if it works better for Jack. First, don't lean over him. If you have to, bend down on your knee to get closer to his level before you pet him. Also, don't reach over his head to pet him. Come from the side and scratch your dog's ear before you move your hand over to his head. |

| UMMM. I dont have any of these problems, I really am blessed. She-ra comes when I call, even if she's in trouble. At bed time all I have to say is "She-ra, go to bed" and she goes right in. And doesn't care if you come at her, she usually flops on her back for you to rub her belly. Good luck, maybe those things will change for you!!

| Beau backs away when I go to reach for him as well. Sometimes he comes when I call him, sometimes not. When he does come, he's still just a little out of reach. |

| Tia does the backing away thing too. But if I am standing and say "Do you want up?" She crouches down until my hands are on her, then does this little leap. It's very cute!

| Well Thank God its not that I have bad breath or BO that is sending my Sydnee into backing up when I reach for her. I was beginning to think maybe I had personal hygiene issues. She will do everything really good, except the come and when I go to pick her up. Other than that she has me trained really well. So thanks for the advice Quote:

| No petting please Thank you all for your replies, it is so good to know that Jack is just not that stubborn, it is just a normal thing.. I will try the coming at him from a different angle. He loves to be held, and jumps at me to get on my lap, so I know it is not that he doesn't like me. As for the coming when called I guess I will just have to keep working at it, but by the sounds of it that could be a impossible task. Thank you all again. |

| Have you worked with him twice a day with a leash using treats and a clicker to teach come. Running the other direction backwards and making "come" a fun trick instead of an angry command is important. It is also not good to call come when you are going to punish the dog. It is best to go get him in that case. Once he has mastered come on a longer and longer leash then try it without a leash in an enclosed area. "Sit, Stay" is also a good and necessary command for any dog in case they have crossed a street or are in some other potential immediate danger and you don't want them to move. You can gradually work up to doing "come" on a leash in a busy park with lots of distractions. It just takes patience and perssitence. If you have already done all of the above, then maybe enlisting the help of a professional trainer would be warranted for his safety and protection. Good luck! |

| When I read these posts I think of Joan Rivers' story about her male, Spike. He was totally enamoured with a pink frou-frou slipper. So much so that the slipper was given a name-Lolita. And had to be hidden when company came for purposes of "delicacy!" One night he found his true love during a very upscale dinner party. He brought Lolita into the diningroom and proceeded to have his way with her..I can just imagine that... |
