| Help...heat cycle question... Here is my question: Juliet went into her heat cycle May 5th and ended it around the 26th. The swelling went down and all was well but now the swelling is back, her tummy is swelling like she is developing milk and her area is dark. All of the dogs are going crazy. I don't know what is going on. I can't think of a time she was alone around a male and I didn't let her around my boy during her cycle but her tummy is getting bigger. I just need to know what is going on. Is it possible to go into her heat several times cloise together or could this be a false pregnancy??? This is just weird. She is exibiting all of the signs of pregnancy here. Please help!!!

| If you are sure she was not bred, then I would say that it is a false pregnancy. They will go through the same symptoms as if they really were pregnant, and the dog may actually think that it is pregnant when it is really just a false pregnancy.

| My cocker spaniel Gypsy Rose did that on her first heat. She even nursed kittens that were dumped out. The vet told me to keep an eye on it. You need to take her to the vet to get checked out.

That happened to Sadie also although, she didn't get the fat belly. She did produce milk. I brought her to the vet and he told me it was a false pregnancy. I only have her (for right now!) So I knew she wasn't pregnant..just wanted to make sure she was ok...never had that happen to me before.

| It is a common condition called pseudopregnancy. In some cases the female will continue for the entire duration of a normal pregnancy ending with swollen mammary glands and adopting a "pseudopuppy", i.e. a favorite toy, or other beloved item. |
