Harness vs. Collar I am hoping to bring home a three year old Yorkie tomorrow, and she weighs 6 lbs. I understand some of these dogs have problems with collars, and wanted to get some feedback on this. How would I know what size? Also, can you give me some ideas as to what kind of chewy toys I can get? I did pick up two stuffed animals, and a rope type thing for her to chew on . I am taking some rope with me as I forgot to get a collar, but I do have a leash. Thanks, and I will let everyone know how it goes. You have all been great. Kate

I have never used a collar nor do I recommend using one when I am covering the care of a pup or adult. I advise the new mom to take the doggy to the pet store with her BUT NEVER PUT THE BABY ON THE FLOOR! There are too many sick animals who walk around and you never know what your baby can pick up. Anyhow, that is the only way I know of that you can fit the proper HARNESS on a Yorkie..I know you can take measurements but I am just not good at that..I would take a crate and bring your newbie home in a crate. Then you can take your time about buying a harness unless you live where you will have to take baby on a leash as soon as you get her..

I would never use a collar to walk your new yorkie, I'd only use a harness. A small harness should be fine, they are adjustable. I also use the retractable leash, its so much eaiser to walk them when they have room to roam or you can shorten it if you need to keep them close. My yorkies seem to like all toys so its hard to choose which would be their favorite. Maybe when you go to the pet store you can ask the worker to show you the big hit toys Mine like little cat balls, (sounds funny I know) but they are little balls that have a bell in it or something that makes a noise when you roll the ball around. I just bought this thing at PetCo that they LOVE its a fabric toy that says its for the freezer, you wet it then freeze it and give it to your dog. Mine were going crazy for it a little while ago .. good luck, maybe the seller will even send you with some of her favorite toys, that would be cool.

| Thanks W. Mom. You have been a big help today. I don't have a fenced yard, so she will definitely be on a long leash, or whatever you call it. I walk alot, so I am hoping she can do the three daily miles with me. Great idea about taking Sadie to the pet store with me. | I use a harness on Sydnee because of the scare I have about anything around her throat. She is 4 months old and I bought hers about 2 months or more ago when I brought her home and its xs and she still has a lot of room to grow in it. She weighs 3 pounds. PS as for those 3 miles, Sydnee does about oh 50 feet and decides she would rather be carried, thank God she doesnt weigh more than my hand weights, I just have to remember to switch arms so they both get the strength training. | I use both on Cordelia, but when I'm going to walk around with her I use a harness. I only use the collar when I put her in her carrier or just for her to wear around the house, because I have 2 cute collars the look so cute on her. If you are going to be walking your puppy a lot, I would get a harness.

Ok I have a problem. My puppy doesnt fit into any collars or harnesses. He is still too small. He is 9 weeks and weighs about 1 1/2 lbs. Should I use a bigger harness on him or wait until he grows into it?

I didnt walk either of my yorkies till they had all their shots and that was about 16 weeks old, at that point they both fit into a small harness with adjusted all the way down. The harness I got for Missy was x-small fit her perfectly when she was 2lbs and at 4lbs it doesnt fit anymore. The harness I got for Max fit perfectly at 2lbs and at 4lbs I was able to adjust it and it still fits great. Hopefully you can find an x-small harness.. good luck!
