When to spay???? Good Afternoon Everyone, I am not sure if I want to have Molly spayed or not, but if I do decide too I was wondering is it better to have her spayed before or after her first heat. Molly is now 7 months old and has not had her first heat yet. Another question....will I know when she is in heat? Is it noticeable? Thanks, Crystal and Molly

After 6 months you can spay her...you should notice when she is in heat, you'll see the spots of blood and she will be swollen. I think it is safer to spay her before her first heat, if you do a search on here I'm sure you will find posts about it.

I just brought this up with our vet on Bailey's last visit. She's just 14 weeks, but I wanted to know when to plan for it. He said that the maximum benefits to her long-term health come from having her spayed before she first comes into heat. The reduction in risks of cancer, mammary infections, etc. are still greatly reduced if the surgery is performed after that, just not as great a reduction as there is if it is done earlier. We're planning on Bailey's at about 5 months. He said that wouldn't be too early for her.
