| I need your opinion on this! I don't know what to do! Brianna just turned a year old, and she just got her first heat. I am so confused because I do not know if I want to get her spayed or not! But the vet that I am taking her to is telling me that if I want her to keep being his patient that I have to get her spay. I really do not know what to do. I really like this vet and I trust him with the girls. but I think that it is my decision if I want to spay my girls or not. What should I do? Here are some pics of Brianna. And another of Brianna and Gracie!

| He gave you an ultimatum???? Personally, I wouldn't care how much I liked the vet, I would find a new one. Now, it is over the spay, in the future it will be something else. I'm sorry, but I do respect professional opinion, however, that is not an opinion. He is forcing his beliefs on you, and what if you wanted to breed her??? I just cannot agree with his statement. I am sorry you are in this situation.

| I would find another vet. Weather you want to spay her or not should be your decision not his.

| SHove him in the back of your trunk for a day or two, see if he changes his way of thinking. Re must give you a good reason, pros and cons. If you dont spay her, you an have little babies in the future, perhaps keep one or two for yourself, sell the rest, or give them to loved ones as an early B day present. |

| How big is your little girl? Is he saying this because she is too small to be bred? If so, he might have her well being in mind.

| I have not had Nikko neutered yet and every time I take him to the vet, he suggests I get him fixed and runs down the list of benefits to having it done. But he has never forced the issue on me and this last time I took Nikko in, he didn't even mention it. A doctor has no place to force an elective medical procedure on any patient, be it animal or human. All he can do is advise you but it sounds to me like he is blackmailing you into it or he will refuse to see your dog. My advice? Lose the vet and get one that respects your rights as a pet owner to make decisions for your own dog. How dare he!!

| I agree with everyone else,I would find a new vet. No vet should ever give you an ultimatium or pressure you into something you are unsure of. I would have a long hard think about having your baby spayed, there are many pro's and con's,it just all depends on your personal circumstances. Good Luck |

My Vet always urged me to spaye and quite frankly since I was not ever going to breed they were absolutely right! I lost my “Tiki” at 17 years old because she had such a bad uterine infection that it left me only two choices, either try to get the infection under control in order to spaye, or bring her home and prepare for her demise. I did get the infection under enough control in order to spaye, but she did not have the strengh to survive longer than 3 days. My little “Raisin” also had a uterine infection at 9 years old which did not result in any physical hardships, but I did have her spayed soon after only to loose her a month later. So very sad as she was such a precious angel. So at any rate, it is your choice. If you are not planning to breed, it probably is the best for their health and well being.

| Kick him to the curb and find a new vet. It's like he's giving you a choice. "either you choose me or you get your pup spayed" That's ridiculous |

| I do agree that he wasn't very tactful, and should not have given you an ultimatum!! However, that being said, there are very good reasons to have them spayed, as long as you are not intending to breed them. Vets and their office staff get many, many unwanted puppies and kittens EVERY day!! It is heartbreaking to see the number of dogs and cats that have to be put down because the owners didn't either 1. spay/neuter them, or 2. watch them to prevent unwanted pregnancy. I know Yorkies are a little different than the typical "mutt" on the street as far as finding homes for them, and most of us do not allow our dogs to wander around. BUT I am an animal lover PERIOD and can't stand the thought of having HEALTHY animals put to sleep!! I am just giving you all another perspective and something to think about. I don't know your personal situation but try to look at it a bit from where this vet might be coming from. (and NO- I do not believe that makes his statement right!!) Good luck with whatever you decide- I am sure you will make the right decision for you and your babies!!!!

Princessgracie, you seem to trust your vet (maybe even like him). Why not ask for an appointment (without the dogs) to discuss this with him and find out his reasons for such strong views that cause him to issue an ultimatum. After all no vet wants to turn away business without very good reasons. Then after you have taken on board what this chap, who actually knows your dog(s) has to say, you may be better able to decide what to do. Good luck.
