Newest member w/ questions....Hola! Hello everyone, I am very excited to have found this website. I have a place to brag, ask questions, and share stories. My baby yorkie and I are from NJ. Her name is Cookie & she is 4 1/2 months & weighs 2.8 lbs., i guess that's about right. She is adorable, loving and very entertaining. Well we are going camping this weekend and I have questions...this is my first time camping w/ her or w/ a pet for that matter. We will be camping in tents but I'm kind of hesitant to just tie her up at our campsite and I'm sure carrying her around all the time is not going to work either. I need advice, suggestions, experiences, etc. I just started taking her out to the backyard and for walks around the block so I know she likes the outdoors. She looks like a bunny hopping around in the grass!! Of course she is very curious so I wouldn't want to let her roam free at the campsite either. I was thinking of getting one of those fenced off playpens for doggies?? This way she'll be outside but I can keep an eye on her when I can't hold her or have her on her leash. Any ideas to calm my "worried mommy" mind. Thanks in advance. -RubyC

Welcome to YT! A small playpen would work. They are high enough so that there should be no way a Yorkie can jump out of there. Put in some toys, some clothes with your 'scent' on it, and let her in there to play when you are doing other stuff. Otherwise, I'd suggest putting a harness on her and keeping her on a leash, especially since she is so younng. There's quite a few campers and travellers on here, I bet one of them will have some good suggestions for camping.

| Welcome to YT!! You've definitely come to the right place for camping with Yorkies as we do it all the time, as does Bettyeanne, another member here. The very best thing to have for your baby at the campsite is an x-pen (one of those folding wire pens like a playpen that they sell in pet stores). If you know that you won't have shade where you are going, be sure to take a sheet or umbrella to give the pen some shade. Now then, just tuck in a nice bowl of water, perhaps some of her dry dog food, and LOTS of toys to play with....oh, and an old shirt or little dog bed would be nice for her to lie on. Be SURE to get her a little harness, rather than a collar, and begin leash training! We use the retractable leashes since they don't seem to get so tangle up in little Yorkie legs. Be ESPECIALLY CAREFUL about taking your baby near big dogs. They may be very friendly, but our babies are so tiny, it's easy for them to get hurt. Be sure she is IN YOUR ARMS around other dogs. In addition to her regular food and water and her regular bowls, take along bottled water for her to drink. Different water, more than anything else, can cause problems for tender little tumtums. Also, they are in danger of getting hypothermia. I got Higgins a sweatshirt to wear at night when we are camping. You will want to have her snuggle/sleep with you at night so that she doesn't become too chilled, or at least have some very fluffy, warm blankets in a warm bed up off your tent floor for her. You'll want to take lots of plastic bags for pickin' up poops, so that you'll be responsible campers. At 4 1/2 months, your pup has presumably had all vaccinations, which is important when you are around other dogs and any possible wild rabies exposure. Be sure to take medical records and proof of rabies with you, as most campgrounds require them. I keep them in a specially marked envelope in my car's glove compartment, so they're handy. We also made a name tag for Higgins with our cell phone number on it. Just in case...just in case....oh God, wouldn't that be awful? I pack all their gear in a big canvas boat bag from LL Bean, including a little brush and their own towels. And don't forget the peepee pads! They're great in the tent/camper at night and the x-pen during the day. Bettyanne puts a blue plastic tarp down inside the x-pen, but I just let Higgins have fun diggin' in the dirt. He's all boy and loves to dig! Whatever you do, don't leave her alone. Yorkies are VERY stealable and very much in demand! And keep an eye out for any raptors (hawks, eagles, osprey) in the area -- they will swoop down and grab a little pup in the blink of an eye. Try to place your x-pen under a tree so she is not so exposed. Camping is a WONDERFUL experience for dogs! It is great socialiazation experience for puppies! So good for them to get out in the big world. And you will have some memories to cherish forever. WHATEVER YOU DO.....DON'T FORGET YOUR CAMERA!!! Can't wait to hear how it goes! | Welcome Ruby and Cookie You are welcome here.....sounds like you have a precious little one...just a note of caution....I have been giving lots of these lately A camper near us had their yorkie stolen from their out side doggie playpen recently.....and a couple parked their RV in a WalMart parking lot...left the generator on......left their little yorkie inside.....apparently the little one hopped up into the passenger seat and watched them out the side window....when they got back to the RV....someone had pushed the window aside and taken their baby......I walked out as they discovered her missing and the owners were devastated...I don't know if their little dog was recovered. We have to watch them so closely.....they are adorable and vulnerable to those who want them too... Max's Mom |

max's mom: you are so right... I put a chip on my little one, but I don't even trust that. When these doggies fall into the hands of bad people, who knows what they want them for.. I have heard horrible stories of some people having their female yorkies to get pregnant until their uterus would brake, then, they don't want them anymore. The Yorkie rescue has lots of cases of the like. Just a good word of advise you have given us.. -Raiza

Higgins Mom: Thank you soo much for all the great advice. Its great to know I was not over thinking the little things. I will keep your suggestions in mind. BTW yes Cookie recently got all of her vaccinations so thats the only reason I would even consider taking her to this environment. But I still can't help but worry about fleas... Anyone receommend a certain type of flea collar? I'm sure its different for all dogs!!! I was thinking about using a tarp also. I would be devastated should anything happen to her out there. I'm still thinking if its such a good idea to take her w/ me?!?!?!! We might go white water rafting & tubing so I might end up getting her grandparents to puppy-sit. If it was just my boyfriend and I going I would be fine w/ taking her but its going to be 5 couples and 1 puppy so I'm not to comfortable w/ the idea just yet. We'll see....but i'm sure she would have a blast!!! Thanks again everyone! -Ruby C
