| Advice for a Worried Mommy I realize that this post should go under "health" or "emergencies", but this forum seems to have more traffic. Yesterday at the vet I heard the three words I've been dreading, "It's her kneecaps". I understand this happens to Yorkies, but before I consult the specialist for surgery I thought I'd consult the Yorkie specialists....you guys! Here are a few of the questions I have now that perhaps you can help answer too. - Is my baby in pain right now? - Is this surgery helpful and not give her problems in the future? - What price range should I be looking at for the operation? - Anything I can do to help her pre-op and post-op? ANYTHING you can tell me is sooo appreciated! Thank you!!! MISTY |

| Hey! My 8 month old baby just got diagnosed with luxating patella this past sunday (2 days ago). I was heart broken and then I started doing research and asking a bunch of questions. I'll try to help. How old is your pup and does she limp when she walks? - Is my baby in pain right now? yes, if she is limping that is why the vet gives us pain meds. - Is this surgery helpful and not give her problems in the future? supposedly, if we do not proceed with the surgery they will develop arthritis and cause them more pain in the future - do not worry! This is a common surgery and alot of small breeds have this. - What price range should I be looking at for the operation? $1000.00 - 2500.00 - how old is your baby? the pert store we bought my zoe from is paying for the surgery. - Anything I can do to help her pre-op and post-op? pre-op- restrain from active activity, continue with pain meds. post -op - I do not know yet since I have not yet schedule my surgery. I would guess lot of love. Hope I helped. Let me know if YOU hear anything. PM me anytime. I sympathize with your worry. TRUST ME.

| Thanks for your support and answers! Mia turned 8 months old on June 3. She is limping and she's always falling down. I hate to say this, but she walks like a drunk person. The only medicine my dr. told me about was baby tylenol....it seems to help, but I'm not her so it's hard to tell. I definitely want to get this operation done soon, but didn't want to haste into something out of desperation. I hope your baby will be in tip-top shape soon too! Thanks again! |

| Good luck with her surgery and everything! I'm sure she'll be fine. My parents' yorkie (KoKo) has bad knees. The vet wants to do surgery on her, but she is not limping or anything. KoKo has never been confined a day in her life...she has never spent the night at the vet and she has never seen the inside of the crate. She makes herself sick whenever my parents leave her when they go out of town. Since KoKo would have to stay at the vet for a number of days after the surgery, and since she would have to be confined after the surgery, my parents have decided against having the surgery. They are just going to give her medicine for her arthritis when she develops it. KoKo is already 7 years old and she doesn't limp or act like her knees hurt her or anything. So, that seems to be the best option for them. However, I am sure that if KoKo was limping or seemed to be in pain, then my parents would choose to have the surgery. So, you are making a tough but good decision. I know that it is hard to have to watch your baby go through the pain, but just think how much better she will feel after the surgery! We will keep her and you in our prayers! |

| my harley was limping and the doctor said it was his knee caps, I flipped out at the cost of a 1000 dollars a knee. So I gave the pain medication. Then got a product called Missing Link with glycusamine in it.At petsmart. He doesnt have anymore limping or anything now. I am so thankful for that. |

| Hey... so there is a chance that my zoe will NOT need surgery? Here is my dilemma: my baby boy is 8 months old - the petstore will pay for the surgery if I get it done at their vet. I don't want surgery unless its absolutely neccessary. However, if I don't get it down now theres a chance I'll need it years down the line and I would have to pay for it then. SO FRUSTRATING!

| My Max had LP Surgery Monday 6/5 This is not exactly an answer to the specific questions that you asked, but I thought that it might help. I know that a few days ago, when we realized that Max would definitely need surgery, I was searching for answers about what to do for him after surgery. Oh, and it only cost me $401.00 (antibiotics and pain meds included). I am EXTREMELY LUCKY to have a local vet with a lot of experience in this area that doesn't choose to charge crazy prices! I dropped Max off Monday morning with a blanket with my scent on it for comfort. He had the surgery that morning. I was able to go by and visit him around 4:00 pm and while that just made me more neurotic, he was still doped up and doing okay and the leg just had a light wrap around it, thigh to ankle, to cover the stitches. He had to spend the night but we were able to pick him up yesterday morning. He looked good, but he was sleepy most of the day and while he would occasionally allow his foot to tap the floor, he mostly carried himself on the other three feet. He could stand up and walk to his water bowl when needed. He wasn't interested in his kibble, but he ate chicken and rice with his normal appetite. THEN, I took him out last night and he hiked with both the good and the bad leg supporting him. He was also able to stand and do the other by himself. This made me feel so much better. But, all and all, most of the day he slept and wanted to be right up next to me. We felt that he needed the pain meds yesterday and last night. We woke up this morning and he was raring to go. He is hobbling everywhere and ready to play with his toys, so I am extremely optimistic. He has showed no signs of needing pain meds today, we are just keeping an eye on him. I guess I'm just trying to give you a picture of the after surgery experience and give you some comfort that they do better than we give them credit for. (Of course I still feel horrible and guilty because I feel he can't understand why I did this, but again, that's just me being neurotic.) I hope that this helps. k

| My 1 year old yorkie was diagnosed with the same thing. She started limping for about a week and we took her to the doctors.. The operation would have been around $2000.. But he said the knees eventually pop back? I dont know what he did, but after that visit, her knees are fine? She never limped again and I believe it is a waste of money and they do not need surgery unless they have been limping for a while! Shes now running around and jumping off everything and its been 3 months since the incident... so I would make sure if she REALLY needs the surgery. Im glad I did not do it. |
