| Help!! Pepper is miserable with new puppy!!! I need advise really bad! Three weeks ago we had to put our Tobey to sleep. Tobey and Pepper were the best of friends, and although Pepper seemed to miss Tobey, he was fine. I think he was loving all the extra attention that was being lavished on him. Since Tobey had some major socialization issues, we worked very, very hard with Pepper to keep him socialized and happy. He's just over 1 year old and had been an awsome dog. Well, Sunday we picked up our new puppy and thought everything would be wonderful. IT'S NOT! Pepper is miserable! He will hardly play with the puppy or with us. His spunk is gone. He barked at my customer today (usually he loves customers - they mean he gets attention!) His smile is gone from his face. His eyes look pitifully worried. We are trying everything we can think of and today we are in tears. It will BREAK OUR HEARTS if this ruins Pepper. We have been trying to give Pepper extra attention. We have tried keeping the two of them seperate. My sister, who is Pepper's favorite, won't pick up the puppy in front of Pepper and still he is upset. He is showing aggression, WILL NOT share any toys (all Kongs are HIS!) How long do you let this go on? Does anyone have any experience you can share with us? We are scared silly that Pepper will never be the same again. I am really desperate for advise.... ~Allison |

| Well it sounds to me like he is depressed maybe you should've waited a little longer so that he could cope properly and get used to being without him!! Just a thought though.

| hi i dont know if my case will help you but he will adjust soon enough you will see. when i got agapi (dog) home to my 3 year old miu miu (cat) the first week she was so upset wouldnt even let me touch her, they attacked each other and couldnt leave them alone, this week is different, they still dont play and sort of stay out of the other's way but now they seat in the living room with us and no fighting and also they seemed more relaxed... since you have both dogs is bound to be better just give them some time... syour dog is also recoving from a loss... is sort of like taking away his brother and bringing him another... he will be okay in time |

I'm so sorry for what you are going through. Pepper is just grieving the loss of his best friend. It will take a little time. Just be patient with him and don't push the issue. I would think they will be fine in a few days once, he realizes the puppy is not just visiting. Good Luck and keep us posted.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Give it some more time. My pom adjusted pretty well when we brought in Cali. Maya was 8 and always an only dog. Now I think she kinda of likes her but keeps her in her place. MAya has become much more frindly since getting Cali. She will go up to new people and jump in there laps. She never use to do that. Basically dogs are pack animals and they should adjust and love it eventually.

| Most have encouraged me that it will get better (I'd love to hear experiences from more of you).... I still need some counsel on just how to handle Pepper. Was it this bad for anyone else? And my most feared question - Did anyone's furbaby NOT recover their happy personality???? Frankly, I'm almost scared to have that one answered! But maybe you'd be able to tell me what you would try differently if you could do it again..... |

| Kali entered our home 3 weeks ago. Kobe is 7 yrs. old and was spoiled rotten. He would play and watch Kali from the couch (he knew she couldn't get up there). He is slowly warming up to her. She will give him kisses now but he just turns his head and won't give them back. He will get down on the floor with her now. But if she starts nipping at him he gets back up. I can't wait for the day that I find them snuggled up together. |

| I am so sorry you are having this problem, it would be horrible for me... Try to continue to reassure Pepper that he is number 1 dog.... I found that my Tinker reacted badly when we got Tootie, but I made sure to reassure her that she is the PRINCESS and eventually she got better! She did get her personality back but still keeps a distance from Tootie.d

| Here's today's update - I think he's gonna pull through! Hurrah! Boy, did we have some anxious moments!!! He's still not back to normal, but he is doing better. He is getting his spring back and that worried look is not constantly on his face. We have spent TONS of time with him trying to let him know that he is still mega important to us. My poor sister had some real teary moments though! She just felt like she was losing her Pepper! I felt SOOO bad! We're not through the woods yet, but thankfully, thankfully it's looking better. Thanks bunches for all your encouragement! ~Allison, Pepper, and "Little Girl" (we STILL can't come up with just the right name!!!) |
