| Hernia question...scared and feeling sad (long) Hi, I don't know if anyone remembers me and my sweet Sophie, but this was the site that I turned to when I needed to educate myself about Yorkies after I got Sophie. Sophie is 1 1/2 yrs. old now and I just love her to death. Here is the part that may make me seem like a bad Yorkie mommy, but I promise I am not.... I have not had her umbilical hernia fixed. The vet said they could fix it when they do the spay. The hernia was very small at first, but it "bubbled" out quickly and has stayed the same for several months now. I know that I need to take her in, but I have this fear that she will not make it through surgery. Common sense tells me she will, but it is my fear that has kept me from picking up the phone to schedule it. She is not in any pain from it at all and is acting the same as any other day. I know that is the reason I allowed myself to keep putting it off. The only reason I am more concerned now is that I leave for vacation on Saturday and I worry that something could get worse while I am away. I am going to call my vet and ask them what I should do and obviously I will take her to the vet tomorrow if need be for them to check it out in person. I feel just AWFUL and so guilty that I have not taken care of this for her sooner. Honestly, I am just too scared to lose her. Has anyone else put off umbilical surgery for a while...was it o.k.? I have read TONS about it and it obviously isn't life threatening at this time. I don't know if this is the kind that can become so or not though. I guess no one really does and that is why it needs to be fixed. I just wish I hadn't let my fear keep me from doing it already. (funny thing, Sophia is in my lap right now, and you know how our dogs can tell if we are sad? well suddenly she is acting all perky and playful like she is trying to make me feel better. Sweet little thing.)

| She is really pretty...her face is so adorable. I have never had experience with a hernia but I certainly understand your fear of surgery....as long as you trust your vet and he/she has experience with this type of problem then Sophie should be fine. We all love our babies so much it can be paralyzing to think of losing them. Big Hug ...you are not a bad person for loving your dog so much.

| Jager, my cat had an umbilical hernia when he was born, I didn't wait long since he was a male cat, I had to get him fixed as soon as I could. But when he got neutered the doctor fixed the umbilical hernia at the same time. Its a very simple surgery, I was working for the vet that performed it so I even was able to watch him do it. This was years ago but I belive it was only a few stitches. Its better to get the spay and the umbilical hernia done at the same time, this way your little one doesn't have to go under Anesthesia twice. |

| Well she is gorgeous and I can understand your fear. But remember the hernia could cause her a lot of problems. My little one at her spaying and hernia repair at 5 1/2 months and she was not quite 3 lbs. She did great- never slowed her down for even one day. I wish you the best. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I know how scary the thought of surgery is but as long as you trust your vet and do the presurgery blood work she should do just fine. You are not a bad mommy you just love her so much and are afraid of losing her. I would get it done as soon as possible to prevent complications.

| Thank you for all the nice comments and reassurances. I was up almost all night worrying about it. I just have a bad feeling about leaving her for 5 nights while we are on vacation with this not being taken care of. So, here is what I decided to do. When I have had to be away before I have always had someone come to the house several times a day to take care of her. I can't stand the thought of boarding her. But, the animal hospital we go to has boarding at their main facility where they do the operations. So, I can take her there tonight and she will have the spay/hearia operation/ microchip all done at the same time on either Tues. or Wed. The benefit to her safety and my peice of mind is that she is already at the hospital should anything go wrong. As much as I feel bad for having her there so long, it is the safest place for her considering all things. This way they will be able to monitor before and after her surgery. The people there are very kind and I do trust them, so that is all good too. Please say a prayer that her surgeries go well. Thanks for your support.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I think that is a good idea. You will have piece of mind that she is where they can monitor her and get the surgery's all over with. I will keep her in my prayers. Try not to worry and enjoy your vacation. Whne you get back she will be ready to come home to recuperate and you can spoil her rotten.

| We didn't have an umbilical hernia fixed and I woke up to find my dog dead from complications from it one day---no prior indications of pain, discomfort, nada. You may never have problems for it. Mostly complications arise from dogs becoming over heated and over excited. Can you keep her quiet at all times? I wouldn't imagine so. My advice is take her in to have it corrected. I'm sorry, I'm not trying to sound mean and harsh, but you have to understand what could happen if you ignore it. I understand how scary it is to think of losing her, but what choice do you have. The way I see it, you stand a chance to lose her during surgery (a slim chance I would think) and you stand a chance losing her if you put it off. Why not take the chance getting her well? |

| I don't think you are being harsh at all, I appreciate your advice. That just reinforces my decision to take her in this evening! I know I made the right decision because for the first time since I started worrying about this I feel better.

| Sohpie is so adorable. Im glad that you decided had her hernia repair. How is she doing after her surgery? Gucci was spayed last year and she developed a hernia in that area. So she had to have it repair this year. She did well on her surgery. |
