| URRR!! I Am So Frustrated!! I have to vent. I know it's talked about a lot on the boards. I thought I was a patient person, but today, Yogi made me flip my lid!!! He is almost 5 months old. When I got him, he did great with puppy pads. We really wanted him to be totally housebroke and go outside only. So, I removed the puppy pads and started the crate training. Had few accidents, but it was improving. I took him out first thing this morning. He pee'd twice, no poo. Put him back in his crate. My son came down for school, he took him out to see if he'd poo. He did and pees. Not even 10 MINUTES from going outside, he hops up on my COUCH, right NEXT TO ME and PEES!!! Then, he hops down, goes behind the loveseat and POOPS!! I don't understand it!! I expected some regression on some things when we brought Dixie home, which has been two weeks ago. But I also thought, that since we had puppy pads down everywhere for Dixie, because she is so young, that he would go on those. He has been peeing and pooping everywhere. It had started getting bad, even before Dixie was home. So I don't think it's just her. I don't know what to do. If after almost 3 months of potty training, and he is going on my COUCH, I don't think he will ever get it!!

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | Try and be patient with him right now....go back to everything you were doing when you first brought him home!! Reward him when he does right and ignore him when he does wrong, bringing home Dixie probably makes him jealous and his is trying to get your attention, whether it be good attention or bad attention. Take it one day at a time and really work with him... Magic did the same thing when we brought Sailor home...after about a month she settled back into her potty training and rarely has problems now!! But it took some hard days to get her realize that she was going to potty outside only if she wanted a reward!

| I know what you are going through. My little guy did this to me too. He even would get up on the sofa and pee and look at us. It pissed me off so much. I just stuck with picking him up telling him "NO" and taking him outside where i have a safe space blocked off for him and I would just leave him out there for a bit! The wierd thing is he just turned 6 months and it was like a light switch that went on and he has not had another accident since. i think also the dog door we got him really helped this way he can go in and out when he wants and do his business. We have him going on the patio and I just rinse it off daily. Is this an option for you? Best of luck - I empathize!!

| A dog door isn't an option for us. We have a fenced in back yard. Well, it's fenced in, but not yorkie proof yet. But my husband is going out this weekend and making it yorkie proof. But the only way out to the back yard from our house, is french doors. I don't know much about doggie doors, but I think they have to be put in an existing door, right? Can't do that through the glass.... I know I need to be patient...but he's not even using the puppy pads that are down anymore!! He goes everywhere else but there...he doesn't even show me that he has to pee or poop. He doesn't come even close to going to the door. he'll just get up wherever he's at and squat. No sniffing, no dancing, nothing. question: Do you all think I would be making a big mistake if I went back to trying to train him to go on puppy pads? Would that be a huge step back? I have done some reading and have found a lot of people say that it's nearly impossible to housetrain a dog under six months. That they can't put it together and what it is until then, is them training you. You take them out every hour, so the odds are they will go outside and not in the house. If it's true and I'm spinning my wheels expecting this to happen before six months of age, then I'm thinking I need to at least get him back on the puppy pads to save my house!! HELP!

| Just had to encourage you! We have only had Yorkies and so we thought ALL dogs weren't trustworthy until 1 year old! Someone told us that Yorkies just take longer, said her other dogs were all housebroken in no time. Don't know exactly what to think of that! LOL!! Neither one of our dogs were allowed on the carpet without guarded supervision until about a year old. We were extremely careful to let them out often - we did EVERYTHING! But they still had accidents - and sometimes very often! Now as we wait for our thrid puppy to come home we are prepared to relax and enjoy her!! We're just geared up for the long haul! LOL!!! Enjoy him - he won't be a puppy forever! Last edited by northview5; 06-01-2006 at 01:44 PM. |

| Well, I'm going to keep reading this thread - watching for someone to come up with a magical, trouble-free, sure-fire answer to the housebreaking problem. I could certainly use one! I'm far more patient with Bailey than my wife is, and there are days that I want to shake her! Like that could ever happen - one look at that little face and I melt. When we first brought Bailey home, I tried the puppy pads. She completely ignored them. I really thought they'd be a good long-term solution because I don't know how we're going to handle outdoor potty trips in the middle of a thunderstorm or when the temperature is in the 20's, etc. But they clearly aren't going to work. The standard procedures - a firm "NO" and a hurried trip outside when we catch her about to go, frequent trips outside, command cues ("go potty"), praise as soon as she starts peeing or pooping ("good girl, good potty"), rewards (treats) and restrictions (going bact to the crate for a while when we're confident she should have to go but doesn't do it) are producing irregular results. And we don't switch around - we do all of them all of the time. Sometimes she'll do well for a day or two, then she will seem just defiant about not wanting to do what we want done. She'll spend 15-30 minutes outside and do nothing except chew on the grass and try to dig a hole, then pee within seconds of coming inside. I keep reminding myself she's a baby (12 weeks), and keep looking forward to that day when it all comes together for her. Sure hope it's soon. |

| I Understand Bailey is 7 months and she still isn't 100%. We also have done the firm "No" when we have caught her, but it does seem to take a while. And sometimes the seem to figure out a compromise with you. Bailey now is pretty good using the pads to pee on, but she likes to poo on the bathroom floor, next to the toilet. Its a compromise I can live with!!

| Tiger is really good at peeing on the pad but now that I take him out 3X a day for walks, he practically does all of it outdoors. He does very well with crate training and now he is no longer confined and he has showed tremendous improvement and continue to do so. When I would come home for lunch and after work, the pad is always dry. He is very good at holding his pee up to 7 or so hours. However, as soon as I let him run around the house, he relieves himself . . .and my guess is that because he is still a puppy and gets very excited, he could not control his bladder during these times. So, I don't take any chances when he is exploring . . . I slap him with a belly band. I figure that eventually he will outgrow this phase when he is older and will eventually cease to pee everytime he gets excited or active. And since there is no trace whatsoever of pee/poop in the rest of my house, he is technically NOT marking (I think!). . . . |

That sounds like a Good Plan! They only associate you putting them outside with "down to business" before they can play! I'm going to write that one down! hahaha Francie | |

| Thank You! Thank you all sooo much for the support! I know that there isn't a magical solution and that it takes time and patience. I'm just starting to run a little low on both the patience and the time right now! I tried putting him in our laundry room with puppy pads this afternoon. I was thinking of trying to get him back on the puppy pads to better save our carpet while trying to teach the going outside. He peed and pooped every where else BUT the puppy pads!! So I will go back to the crate training and just be a little bit more strict on it then I have been. I think I'm so frustrated because I get the feeling that a lot of his peeing and pooping lately, like for instance, peeing next to me on the couch, is because he is mad at me. I can understand he may be upset because of the new puppy. But how do you handle and what do you do when they are peeing and pooping to show they are mad? Do you handle it the same way as when they just pee and poop because they don't know better?

| I can relate... I thought we were making progress with Dylan who is also almost 5 months old but boy, have we regressed this past week. I'll take him out and he'll pee and not 15 minutes later he'll make another big puddle in the house. You'd think he wouldn't have to go for about an hour then but I swear 1/2 hour later and I catch him in the act again. I also have been crating him during the day while I'm at work in a very small crate and he can't even make it until lunchtime (4 1/2 hrs). He'll pee in his crate and then lay in it. I have had to give him a bath at lunch the last 3 days in a row. I even tried putting some food in there because I have heard they will never pee where the have to eat or sleep. I guess he doesn't mind. I wonder if it has something to do with the teething? He was doing so well just the last couple of weeks and was able to hold it much longer. I even quit feeding him the canned dog food mixed with his dry food because I thought maybe the high moisture content was just to much for his little bladder. I sure hope it's just a stage they are going through. |
