| Kennel Cough A friend of mine took her chihuahua to the vet last week and found out that Chiquita has kennel cough and the vet said that probably was contracted throught the groomers How does this happen and what are the side effects? Also, how long does this last? My friend went to the Cannes film festival and Chiquita is at the vet's at the moment, but the vet will release her within the next two days and she has asked me to take care of her chihuahua. I'm worried for my Brownie, will she contract the disease? Any help would be appreciated....

| Kennel cough tends to be mild but in some dogs if it is not treated and it persists it can lead to some serious problems. Has your dog had a bordella intranasal vaccine? It is not a shot and is typically not given with the other shots, it is squirted up the nose . This will prevent your dog from getting kennel cough. You should always make sure that your dog gets this every year especially if you are going to board them or get them groomed.

| What are the first signs of kennel cough? Gagging? Sneezing? I've never had to deal with this problem before so I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be looking for.

| Do not want to scare anyone but: Gypsy recently got over it. It was a long struggle and we had to keep Gremlin (my dtr's yorkie pup) away from her. Hard to do in a small mobile home! With Gyps they did a throat wash after the 3 different meds did not work. She had 3 types of bacteria that was causing it and finally the right combo of meds kicked it out. She is our miracle girl cause the vet was not sure she would survive it. It is a serious disease. The vet said when she was working in Ga, 1 out of every 5 cases died from the resistant strain the had there. It can take months to get rid of some strains.
