| Chachi running off My daughter went through our gate and let Chachi out of the yard. He ran and when I calle him he kept running. He almost ran out in front of a car. He knows the command come but doesnt obey it in those situations. Do you have any suggestions on how I can get him to come to me if that ever happens again. It is so scary

| Does Chachi know the watch me command? We learned this from the training course we are taking Chester. You take a good treat, put it to their eye and let them sniff it so they know what is in your hand. You move it from their eye to yours and say watch me. Now, when he is walking and is distracted in the streets by cars, we say, watch me and he stops to look us in the face. We also do this right before he crosses a street, watch me, sit, then a release command. Maybe this will help? |

| When Tiger took puppy class (which I think he needs to do a remedial ) the trainer always says never use the word "NO" unless it is something big . . always say "ah-ah-ah" or something . . .so when you say NO, especially to situations where he might be in danger, then he will stop to look at you because of the tone of your voice and the word itself! Of course, I have yet to test that |

| Whenever Katy would do that, I would make sure she sees me, then run in the opposite direction. She will usually turn around and come try to catch me. If I chase her she thinks she in trouble and will keep running. |

| You may be able to get a toy he really likes that makes noise and just keep it by the door and squeek it when he takes off. When, well if, he comes back let him play with it for just a bit then put it back up so he only gets to play with it in those occasions. If its something he really likes it may break his concentration long enough for him to become focused back on you. Now seriously don't know if that would work for Reagan, but it may be worth a shot. Other than that the only thing I can think of is try to put him in these situations, controled though, and work with him. Put a long skinny rope on him(something he won't really notice) and "accidently" let him out act the same way you would if he were to really get out and then call him back and pull him back, then of course praise him. Again crazy idea because I'm sure you've prob already done this. When Reagan is outside she only listens to "come" when she wants so I taught her "in the house" she does much better with that. I don't know if to her come means that once she comes she will be stuck doing whatever I want her to and in the house means she's still free she just has to be in the house. I don't know but I would say at least 9 out of 10 times if not more she listens to that command.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | That's a tough one. Eddie used to run away fairly regularly when he got out. The only way I could get him to stop immediately was to scream loud. It was so out of character for me, I think, that he paid attention. But I hate screaming at him, and I'm not sure it's a good idea. So I started letting him off-leash in the front yard and saying "uh-uh" every time he approached the street or somewhere I didn't want him to go. When he stopped, I rewarded him. Sometimes, I'd walk over to him and give him a treat. When he ran or walked somewhere he wasn't supposed to go, I calmly tracked him down and brought him in the house and ignored him. I think it has helped. He rarely runs away from me any more, and the old screaming thing still works in the rare emergency.

| Some very basic training is in order. Open your front door, block him from running out of it, make him sit, make sure you walk out of the door first, then tell him to come. You probably should start out doing this with a leash. Just don't let him run out a door before you and make him sit and prefereably lay before he is allowed to go out of it at all. My dog will sit down when me or my wife opens any door, and she won't come out of that door unless we tell her to "come." This is how we did it and it worked pretty quickly too.

| Tucker used to bolt for the door when it was open, and it would be blocks before we could catch him. I finally trained him to stay when the door is open. I would make eye contact and say "stay". He picked it up pretty fast. Once he started for the door and I said "Don't you dare" much sharper than I ever talk to him. He stopped dead! then I got the "who me? I wasn't going anywhere" look.

| Kizzy has never done that, but when she is about to go someplace outside that I dont want her (like under my deck) I hold up a treat and say Kizzy, look what I got. she looks and me then so far always comes. goodluck, Ive never sent her to any training school and I probably never will. Hope yours learns to come or stop for you so it doesnt get hurt or maybe killed. try whatever gets her attn the best.
