| New to YT and will be a new yorkie owner Hello to all! I discovered this site a few days ago. I have been scouring the internet for as much Yorkie info as I can digest! I will finally be getting a yorkie in 1 1/2 -2 weeks. I find Cesar Milan(The Dog Whisperer) fascinating and purchased his book...I also have "The complete Idiot's Guide to Yorkshire Terriers" I have been reading that book for at least 2 years..lol. We are very ANXIOUS and EXCITED about the arrival of the new member of the pack. I am most anxious about excessive barking and problems with potty training. I am trying NOT to anticipate the worse and I hope I recall everything I have been learning. I just came from my 1st trip for the puppy at Petco..I havent gotten a crate yet.I plan to do so right before his arrival..the puppy will be about 12-13weeks when i receive him.Question for the crate users..do u have a dog bed and a crate..or just one or the other? I don't understand if you are supposed to have the dog sleep in the crate..why have a dog bed? I bought a couple of soft toys and teething toys....a harness and leash..treat jar...doggy clean up starter kit..and BJ'S had a deal..2 gates for the price of one..$24.00 and some change...I have one up..to get used to it.my cat thinks its an obstacle course or something i think thats it..so much more to purchase.. I find this forum to be as informative as it is entertaining! Once the puppy arrives..i know i will be posting like a nutso!!

| Welcome to YT. It sounds like you are well on your way to Yorkie heaven. Keep reading and keep asking equestions.d Potty training is a mystery. We talk aobut it a lot, but what works for one does not aslways work for another. Ceasar Milan Rocks big time. I've not bought his book yet, but I plan to. I preach to everyone on here about his take charge method. Was the book worth the money? |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk!!! I think the best with a yorkie puppy is to hope for the best but expect the worst when it comes to potty training. When you first get your pup, there will be a few rough weeks depending on how you choose to train. If you are pad training, there are tons of posts on here regarding that subject. We trained Oscar to go outside and it is just a constant relentless pattern you have to get into of taking the pup outside BEFORE they have to go potty. Then when they DO go potty outside, praise, praise, praise. It will be a few months before your pup has complete control if its bladder and bowels...just remember, it is a puppy and a baby and you have to be patient AND forgiving! Congratulations on getting your new puppy. You will absolutely love it!!! I am sure of that!!! We will want to see lots of pics of course!!!

JeanieK...was Cesars Way worth the money? good question..if i hadnt been a devoted viewr of his show..i would say no..because i think a novice would be lost...i dont think of it as a a standard training book...i havent read it cover to cover yet though...but so far its a good read. His life story is interesting. He does give what i think is good, helpful advice along the lines of what you see on tv. i knew going into this ,reading reader reviews on Amazon.com...if you havent yet check those out.I am not sorry i got it..but it definetly win't be the only/last book on dogs i ever get...hope my ramblings helped!

| hey! we are from nj too! romeo is my very first dog and pet. i'm so happy i picked a yorkie. i saw one when i was a little girl and always longed for one. he is my life. training was not as bad as most people say. we do pads and outdoor. he learned best from hanging out with another yorkie and copying his behavior. when he was a pup i had a crate with a dog bed inside. he whined and i kept letting him out. now he never goes in the crate. i took it down. he sleeps with me. i work nights so someone is always home with him. i totally recommend getting a lookout carseat. we were in a bad car accident and it saved his life. |
