| How long is too long to leave yorkie at home alone? My yorkie, Malibu, is left in our laundry room throughout the day as we are in and out. He is not normally left alone for more than 4-6 hours. We go to the lake regularly, but have not been yet since we've had him since we got him at the end of last summer. We are going Sunday. Taking him is one option, but the lake we go to wouldn't be very pet friendly. So...how long is too long to leave him home alone? Would one short visit from a friend to let him out be sufficient over a 10 hour period? or...do any of you have experience taking your yorkies to the lake? How do they handle it? I worry about him...Thanks. |

| Why wouldn't the lake be 'pet friendly'? Yorkies love to be involved in your life and my wee girl loves the river and the beach. Why leave him home alone when he could be having a ball with you?

| Don't leave him at home! But if you have to, is it possible to get someone to come in a couple times? 10 hours is a really long time...

| I know. I really refuse to leave him alone for that long. I guess people do it if both work 8 hours a day, but he is not used to that. The only problem with the lake we are going to is that there is really no good place for him to use the bathroom and the only place for us to eat would require us to go inside and where would he stay?? |

Leaving him home alone would not even be an option for me. I'd have to take him along or get a sitter. I cry just thinking about having him left alone. Get him a good halter, take a crate, get him a life vest whatever, or pleave him with a friend. But please don't leave him home alone for a weekend.

| We have left Lola alone for 10 hours before. We had no choice. She did alright. She has everything she could want at our home. She is usually alone for about 6-7 hours M-F. She does okay.

| Well it wouldn't be for a weekend, just Sunday from about 9-8. We have a life jacket and we definately plan on trying to take him some, just haven't quite figured out how it will work yet. So far none of my friends are available to sit and no kennels will let you drop off or pick up on a Sunday...He mainly just sleeps when we are gone, but I still worry. I cried last night just thinkin about it... |

Well for me peresonally, I would not be able to enjoy myself if I were worried about the puppy, so I would have to take him.

| Are there any local pet sitters in your area? Maybe you could pay a local neighborhood teenager to come and take your pup for a walk.

| I know that it seems harsh to leave your Yorkie alone for so long but many have to do this. I work 9-10 hours a day and have an hour commute (round trip) so my pup is alone 10-11 hours 4 days a week (I know, that some may think it is selfish to get a Yorkie if you can not be with it more, but mine forgives me and still loves me). I lavish much more attention on her in the evenings and weekends, (even when I am home, she sleeps most of the day because that is her routine now), but you do what you have to do. If you are only doing this once in a while, then I think your Yorkie is very lucky like those that have owners that are home more frequently and can be with their Yorkies almost all the time. If he has been fine for 4-6 hours, 10 hours once in a while will not be that horrible - just my opinion. |

| Thanks jbnsa! That makes me feel a little better if we do end up having to leave him. I would still have someone come see him and let him out at least once. |

| Mine Would Not Handle That Long....it Depends On How Independent Your Yorkie Is.....i Would Have Someone Let Them Out Once Or Twice During That Time.....it Wont Kill Them To Be Left Alone That Long It May Just Confuse Them
