| How long does Advantage flea stuff last with baths? Kirby had his last flea treatment on 4/7, about 3 weeks ago. The package says it lasts for 30 days but it's vague about baths. It says on the package and I quote "Advantage remains efficacious following a shampoo treatment, swimming or after exposure to rain or sunlight". (after getting out the dictionary to look up 'efficacious', it means 'effective', why can't people just use the simplest term to get the job done, jeeze.) Maybe the keyword there is 'A', ...follwing A shampoo treatment... does that mean one bath? It doesn't say how many baths it lasts through. I'm going to try bathe him about 2-3 times a month, every 10-14 days or so. So should I reapply the Advantage after the 2nd bath of the month or what? I've noticed him scratching and biting his butt and legs more lately but I haven't actually seen any fleas. Does anybody else use Advantage? If so how often do you apply after baths. I know this stuff is toxic and is a pesticide so I don't want to over do it but I also don't want him, or me, to get fleas.

| I believe I can answer this. First off, I used to use advantage but now have switched to revolution because it prevents heart worms along with the fleas and ticks. I believe that when you apply a product such as revolution or advantage it is water proof after 2-3 hours because that's how long it takes to soak into the skin and enter the blood stream thus providing the protection. I bathe my yorkies quite a bit... |

| Yes, usually we apply flea treatment once a month, right after a bath usually, right behind Yoda's head in the neck area, where he can't lick it. I think Robbie has a good point, as by the next day, the smell and any residue from it is gone. |

YT 3000 Club Member | I use revolution it is much more water resistant, alot of bathing with the other flea stuff such as frontline and advantage. I think if you bath them often revolution is the only way to go plus it covers more stuff, heartworm, sarcoptic mange, ear mites, and american dog tick. revolution is considered a drug and not a pesticide like the other stuff. |

| Oh, the other thing my vet's assistant told me is that you DO NOT want to apply it right after a bath. Wait a few days so there is some oil on the hair. This allows the product to more easily go into the fat cells. I was advised to wait 3 days after a bath to apply, and wait a few days after the application to bathe again. |

| I was also told not to apply right after a bath...it irritates the skin more without the naturals oils... |

| I questioned my vet about this and the fact that the package says it lasts for thirty days but does not. he told me that they all say that but none of them last that long unless you use a soapless shampoo which I have started using on mine when i don't use the Dawn for fleas or the Baby shampoo.. |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Living here in South Texas, I've found that these products are most effective when reapplied between 3 1/2 - 4 weeks. The products worked GREAT during the first 3 weeks but then towards the end of the 3rd week through about 4 1/2 weeks, the fleas would reapprear. This year, I've heavily treated the yards and so far haven't seen a flea...knock-on-wood. I bathe my dogs once a week (unless they get nasty like roll around on something they shouldn't) but Frontline Plus is what I've found most effective with fleas down here.

| I bathe several times after I put the advantage on and it is still effective. I never bathe the day I put it on. It lasts for about 4 weeks

| I am looking into Revolution and this is what I found: Revolution ® Revolution is a topical parasiticide that is applied to the skin of dogs and cats six weeks of age and older to kill adult fleas and prevent flea eggs from hatching, prevent heartworm disease and protect your pet against other parasites (see below). Dog Parasites: • Control and prevention of flea infestation (Ctenocephalides felis) • Prevention of heartworm disease (Dirofilaria immitis) • Treatment and control of ear mite infestation (Otodectes cynotis) • Treatment and control of sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei) • Control of the American Dog Tick (Dermacentor variabilis) Cat Parasites: • Control and prevention of flea infestation (Ctenocephalides felis) • Prevention of heartworm disease (Dirofilaria immitis) • Treatment and control of ear mite infestation (Otodectes cynotis) • Treatment and control of intestinal worms Roundworm (Toxocara cati) Hookworm (Ancylostoma tubaeforme) Once applied, Revolution enters the bloodstream through the skin. Concentrations of Revolution in the blood and intestinal tract prevent heartworm disease and treat gastrointestinal parasites, respectively. Revolution selectively redistributes from blood to sebaceous glands, which are found below the skin's surface. Revolution's presence in the sebaceous glands and in the skin is the reservoir of drug that provides protection against fleas, flea eggs, ticks and mites. Revolution should be used with caution in sick, debilitated or underweight animals. Dogs should be tested for heartworm disease prior to giving Revolution. If your dog tests positive for adult heartworms, your veterinarian can recommend appropriate treatment. Dogs infected with adult heartworms can safely be given Revolution. Dosage for your Pet: Your veterinarian will recommend the appropriate dose for your dog or cat based on your animal’s body weight. You should not administer Revolution to your dog or cat if he/she is younger than 6 weeks of age. Revolution is available in six separate dose strengths for dogs and cats of different weights. What should I do if I do not give Revolution on time or miss a dose? If you forget to apply a monthly dose of Revolution, immediately apply Revolution, resume monthly applications, and notify your veterinarian. What if I administer more than the prescribed amount of Revolution to my dog or cat? Contact your veterinarian if you administer more than the prescribed amount of Revolution. How should Revolution be applied? Do not massage Revolution into the skin. Do not apply when the hair coat is wet. Do not apply to broken skin—Revolution contains alcohol. Stiff hair, clumping of hair, hair discoloration, or a slight powdery residue may be observed at the site in some animals. These effects are usually temporary and do not affect the safety or effectiveness of the product. Can I give my pet a bath after applying Revolution? Yes. Studies show that effectiveness is not reduced by bathing or immersing your pet in water two hours after application. When can I play with my pet following treatment with Revolution? You should avoid contact with application site when wet. You may hold or play with your pet any time after the area on which Revolution was applied is dry. I see fleas on my dog or cat. Is Revolution working? Revolution kills adult fleas and prevents flea eggs from hatching. You may occasionally see a few fleas on dogs or cats treated with Revolution but more than 98% of adult fleas are killed within 36 hours. Immature stages of the flea called pupae may be present in your pets’ environment (yard, flooring, carpet, bedding, etc.). These pupae are not killed by parasiticides (including Revolution) and as such may emerge as adult fleas. These adult fleas may hop onto your pet at anytime. They must be exposed to Revolution on your dog or cat before being killed. It can take from 3–5 weeks (or longer depending on environmental conditions) for most fleas to complete their 4-stage life cycle (egg, larvae, pupae, and adult) and reach the adult stage before being seen on your pet. Due to the presence of immature flea stages in infested environments, it can take up to 2 to 3 monthly applications for Revolution to maximally control the infestation of fleas in the environment. Once the flea population is controlled you will be less likely to see fleas. I see ticks on my dog. Is Revolution working? Revolution controls tick infestations only due to the American Dog Tick (Dermacentor variabilis), a tick commonly found on dogs. There are other common species of ticks that are not killed or controlled by Revolution. Your veterinarian can recommend appropriate products to control or kill ticks common to your area. For the control of the American Dog Tick, Revolution should be applied once a month; however, your veterinarian may recommend a second administration applied 14 days after the first dose if your dog has a heavy tick infestation and/or recommend additional tick control methods. It may take up to 5 days to kill the majority of ticks on your dog. What are the possible side effects of Revolution? Like all medicines, Revolution has some side effects. The most common is hair loss at the site of application with or without inflammation (redness, flaking) in cats. Other side effects reported in cats and dogs include vomiting, diarrhea with or without blood, anorexia (decreased appetite), lethargy (sluggishness), salivation, rapid breathing, pruritus (itching), urticaria (welts, hives), and erythema (skin redness). Seizures and ataxia (incoordination) were observed rarely. If you have additional questions about possible side effects, talk to your veterinarian. Can Revolution be given with other medicines? In well-controlled clinical studies, Revolution was used safely in dogs and cats receiving other veterinary products such as vaccines, anthelmintics, antiparasitics, antibiotics, steroids, collars, shampoos and dips. Tell your veterinarian about all medicines you have given your dog or cat in the past, and any medicines that you are planning to use with Revolution. This should include other medicines that you can get without a prescription. Your veterinarian may want to check that all of your dog’s or cat’s medicines can be given together. How should Revolution be stored? Revolution is flammable—Keep away from heat, sparks, open flames or other sources of ignition. Store below 30°C (86°F). After application, empty tubes can be placed in your normal household refuse for disposal. What else should I know about Revolution? Revolution is not for use in humans. Revolution should be kept out of reach of children. In humans, Revolution may be irritating to skin and eyes. Reactions such as hives, itching and skin redness have been reported in humans in rare instances. Revolution contains isopropyl alcohol and the preservative butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Wash hands after use and wash off any product in contact with the skin immediately with soap and water. In case of human ingestion contact a doctor immediately.

| This is the Advantage: Advantage FAQ: How fast does Advantage work? Advantage is proven to stop fleas from biting in 3 - 5 minutes, providing the fastest relief. Fleas are killed within 12 hours of application. Re-infesting fleas start dying within one hour and all are killed within two hours. Will Advantage still work if my pet goes swimming or takes a bath? Advantage is water-resistant. It continues to work even when your pet gets wet. Advantage works against fleas even after a shampooing, swimming or exposure to rain or sunlight. Is Advantage gentle enough to use on puppies and kittens? Yes, Advantage is so gentle it can be used on puppies as young as seven weeks and kittens as young as eight weeks. Does Advantage kill flea larvae? Yes, one of the most notable benefits of Advantage is that it is larvicidal. Flea larvae that lurk where your pet plays and sleeps are killed within 20 minutes after coming in contact with Advantage. This larvicidal effect and the speed of kill of Advantage reduces the need for other environmental flea control products or growth inhibitors. It also inhibits larval development in the pet’s surroundings by greater than 99 percent. Can Advantage be used to prevent flea infestations on my pet? Early prevention is key to keeping pets from infestation. Starting a regular flea control regimen like Advantage before the beginning of flea season allows cats and dogs to be healthy and happy all year. Advantage alone can kill fleas and keep further populations from developing, because it effectively breaks the flea life cycle, attacking it in multiple stages. Fleas that jump onto an Advantage-treated pet start dying within one hour and all are killed within two hours. How can a few drops of Advantage protect my pet from fleas? Once Advantage is applied to your pet, it spreads on the surface of the skin, aided by body movement, to provide whole body coverage. The revolutionary chemistry causes the flea's nervous system to become impaired, and the flea dies. How gentle is Advantage on my pet? Advantage is backed by extensive and thorough domestic animal safety studies that show even when administered at five times the target therapeutic dosage for three consecutive days, cats and dogs experienced no adverse effects. If you apply as recommended, you can be confident of the gentleness of Advantage on your pet. Should my pet be clean before I apply Advantage? It is not necessary, but to obtain best results, it is recommended your pet be clean of excess dirt and debris, and be dry before applying Advantage. How often should I use Advantage? A single Advantage treatment will provide flea control for up to one month on cats and at least a month on dogs. The pet may be treated as often as once weekly, if necessary. Can I use Advantage year-round? Yes, Advantage can be used year-round as a preventative measure against flea infestation. It is especially beneficial in areas of the country where fleas are a more serious problem throughout the year. Will Advantage take care of all of my pet's (dog/cat's) flea problems? With Advantage, adult fleas are killed before they can lay eggs. In addition to killing adult fleas, Advantage also kills flea larvae. So when applied monthly, the flea life cycle is attacked at multiple critical stages, breaking the flea life cycle. Research shows when using Advantage, other environmental control products or insect growth inhibitors are not needed to control fleas. Advantage is all you need to keep your pet flea-free. My pet is pregnant -- can I use Advantage on her? As with any product, you should consult your veterinarian before using Advantage if your pet is pregnant or nursing. What other problems are associated with fleas? The successive feeding (biting) of fleas on pets may elicit a hypersensitivity skin disorder known as flea allergy dermatitis (FAD). Secondary skin infections, tapeworms and even anemia are all medical problems associated with fleas. Most can become serious. Why do fleas seem to be a non-stop nuisance? Fleas will jump on your cat or dog, attracted by various stimuli such as body heat, movement and exhaled carbon dioxide. They bite to feed on the blood; then they produce eggs. Eggs drop from your pet to the ground or the carpet. The eggs develop into larvae and over time into adult fleas; then the life cycle starts all over again. A single flea can lay 20-25 eggs per day, so a "few" fleas can become "a lot" of fleas in a short time. What if I still see fleas after using Advantage? Reinfesting fleas, which likely come from the pet's environment or outdoors, will be killed within two hours, with protection against further flea infestation lasting up to a month. Can Advantage be used on older cats and dogs? Yes. Simply "being wise with age" would not preclude the use of Advantage on a dog or cat. As with any product, pet owners with specific concerns should consult their veterinarian prior to use. Have you tested and can you use Advantage on ferrets, rabbits and other exotic pets? Advantage was extensively tested on dogs and cats and found to be well tolerated even at exaggerated doses. Owners of exotic species should consult their veterinarian for appropriate methods of flea control. How is Advantage packaged, and what sizes does it come in? Advantage is available in packages of four and six applications. Both the four- and six-tube packages of Advantage are available in pre-measured, easy-to-use applicator tubes in two sizes for cats and kittens, and four sizes for dogs and puppies based on weight: Cats/Kittens up to 9 lbs. Cats over 9 lbs. Dogs/Puppies up to 10 lbs. Dogs/Puppies 11 - 20 lbs. Dogs/Puppies 21 - 55 lbs. Dogs over 55 lbs.
