| Food Amount for Puppy First of all, I want to thank everyone for all of their replies to my first post about two weeks ago (when I first got little Reesey). Since then, I have named her, and we are getting along great. I have another question. I received my first shipment of Merrick food today (dry and the variety pack of canned). The canned food only recommends amounts for dogs that are at least 5 lbs (3/8 to 5/8 of a can per day). Reesey only weighs 1.2 lbs (at 8 1/2 weeks). How much do you guys recommend I give her? I was also wondering how much of the dry food I should feed her. I'm trying to avoid wasting a lot of food by putting twice as much as she needs in her bowl. Also, the last advice I received was to leave the food out all day. When can I start establishing feeding times and how many times a day should I feed? As always, thanks for all the help. Wad |

| I would mix about a heaping tsp. of wet with 2 tsp. of softened dry 4x a day and adjust to what she will eat in a 15 minute period. At this stage, I would also be giving Nutrical or nutristat 3x a day. I would leave out dry all the time. Once she's eating the dry, stop moistening the dry and give it hard with her regular feedings and slowly reduce the can. Your ultimate goal (in my opinion) is to get her eating just dry dog food. It's better for her health and especially her teeth. Both of my adults are on only dry and get canned as a special treat about 3 times a week. My new 3 month, 2 1/2 pounds old is only eating dry too already. She actually would eat around the can food to get the dry, and preferred it hard even at 8 weeks, 1 1/2 pounds. I do have two other Yorkies and I think she has learned to eat from them so everytime one of them goes and eats a little kibble she joins in. |
