| controlling fleas? Have any of you here tried natural things to control fleas? We have always used Frontline on Baylee and since it has warmed up this year, he is still covered in fleas. I think maybe our boys are bringing them in on them from the woods (we live in the country) and from the outside dogs and they are getting in the carpet and on Baylee and the Frontline doesn't seem to be working. How can that be? I do not want to spray the inside of the house because of the chemicals. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks Baylee's Mom

| You have used Frontline this year and he is still covered? Frontline always works great for me. If you think they are in your carpet, you need to vaccum really well, and wash his bedding . Where in Iowa do you live? |

| I believe it takes a while for it to work. I'd give it a few days anyway. I think someone on here said to wash them in Dawn dish soap. |

| I used frontline always but i have to say i won't this year..for some reason it doesn't work anymore so I would suggest trying advantix..it is supposed to be really good from what i've heard..It's supposed to be good for fleas ticks and mosquitos..that is what i'm getting this week-end for my dogs..i'll let you know how it works if you want me too..it's higher but hopefully worth it..i know alot of people are saying frontline isn't working for them anymore..ticks are really bad this year in my area..so i will def need something good that works..

| Well I have used advantage before and felt like that didn't really work so I switched to Frontline Plus and have used several doses. A couple times I felt like it didn't last long but I think I know what I was doing wrong. I bathed Lucy then right after that I put Frontline on. Supposedly you need to wait 48 hrs after washing so their natural oils can distribute medicine? Atleast that is what the vet lady said. ALso not to wash your pet until 2 days after you put med. I assume this goes for Advantage too..maybe that is why it didn't work so well for me?? Hope this helps.

| Oh!!! I didn't know you weren't supposed to bathe them after putting the frontline on. I would put the med on at night and then in the morning bathe him because I didn't want the kids getting it on them. Our youngest will put him up and love and kiss him right on the back of his neck where the med goes. I try to remind him, but he forgets. I did do some searching today on the site and came up with vinegar and lemon juice sprays. I have even put his bedding and blankets in the dryer on a high setting to kill the suckers. It's really weird though, if I keep him in certain parts of the house, it's like he doesn't have any or very few, but if he goes to my older son's bedroom they attack him and he's covered. We had problems like this a couple of years ago and all I could figure was that the kids were brining the fleas in the house on them and they were getting in the carpet. We have just ripped the carpet out of the living room and are about to do the same thing in the kids bedrooms--so maybe this will help also. We'll see.....I'll let you know. Thanks everyone Baylee's Mom

| You are supposed to not bathe them 3 days before and wait 3 days after treatment. And if i were you i'd bomb your house. If they are getting all over him in your yokries room it sounds like that room is infested and it can happen very quickly. Then after that you can use once a month carpet freshener with flea repellent in it or whatever its called lol..it works to keep them out of your house and to even kill a few if you have jsut a few..you can get it at walmart. You also might want to consider having your yard sprayed too if it's that bad of a problem..I have sprayed my yard before but that was when i was in town..

| Have you talked to your vet about Brewer's Yeast & Garlic tablets? I give all my guys these tablets in order to control fleas and I do not have to put anything on my guys because of the dosing of these tablets. They love the tablets, almost like a treat and it works wonderfully!

| We went thru that last year frontline quit working and my basset was already on brewers yeat and garlic tablets (those are much cheaper over the counter). I tried everything from the vets office and nothing worked. my friend runs an exterminator co. and he said vacuum a lot and AS SOON AS YOU FINISH empty the bag get it out of the house. and if the fleas are coming from the yard you can sprinkle lime (lyme) I dont' know the spelling and that helps.I bought a spray called happy jack sprayed everything and vacuumed constantly and got rid of them in the fall, but the weather helped with bringing them from outside. |

| To kill fleas in the house without chemicals (and cheaply!!!), try this: http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf747531.tip.html It WORKS!!! (although I leave it on for a day or a weekend if I can, before vacuuming!) We've used salt as well. (We have a lot of animals, and live in a flea-heavy area, and esp. when my babies were crawling, I was worried about chemicals.) For a really bad infestation, while doing the above, set pie pans full of water (with a drop of liquid dish soap) on the floor in front of a light source at night. The fleas jump towards the light, into the water (the soap breaks the surface of the water) and they drown. |

| I got my garlic yeast tabs from petsmart. I didnt notice them at the online but there are several online places that carry them. I started using them after a few show breeders were talking about other benifits of them. It is supposed to help keep the coat healthy and smell down on dogs. So far so good for the smell. Brody smell much better after he plays outside now. Before he smelled horrible. |

| Here's a natural remedy to keep the fleas from reproducing in your yard - this will help tremendously to keep them off your animals. However, it will not prevent your babies from getting fleas when you walk them or having a flea or two crawl in your yard and getting on them. Spray your yard with beneficial nematodes - these are microscopic organisms that eats flea eggs and fire ant eggs, as well as grub eggs. You can get them at your local plant nursery - one that carries organic products. You can also order them online - but they must be kept cool (in the fridge) so I don't know how they ship them, be sure to ask because if they get hot, they will die. I do know that they can ship things that need to be kept cold - my husband orders his insulin from a mail-order pharmacy and it comes with a cold pack so the insulin is kept cold during shipping - so I know it can be done - but be sure to ask the online store that ships the nematodes, because if they are not kept cold, they will die and will not work. It just looks like a container of dirt, but when you get them home (keep them in the fridge till you put them on your yard), you follow the instructions, which is to put water in the dirt, let it sit for a while and then strain the water into a sprayer and spray onto your yard. Then water them in. Also, put them on in the cool of the morning or evening - not the heat of the day. Water the yard good so that they soak down into the soil. It will take a week or 2 but viola! no more fleas in your yard and no more fire ants for those of you living in the south. I've used them for 5 years and have only had to have an occasional dawn bath to kill a flea or two on our 4 dogs who are in and out all the time. Another thing you can do if you have a neighbor with a flea infested yard and the fleas are coming across to your yard. Sprinkle diatamacious earth (DE) around the perimeter of your yard - between your yard and theirs. You also get DE at an organic nursery. DE is not harmful to the animals but will kill the fleas. It sounds wierd, but DE is actually finely ground seashells and so when the fleas walk through it, it cuts their legs and their body fluid runs out and they die (yuk). It does have to be reapplied after a rain or watering. The borax carpet treatment also works - but the BEST thing is to rip up your carpets - which we did a few years ago. WONDERFUL!!! Why didn't I do it YEARS ago?????
