Default How long before it ends?

I'm posting this again today hoping to get some more responses. I came home yesterday to another mess--pee and poop all over the x-pen area. How long will this behavior last? Any ideas about what to do to help our puppy release his frustration and energy? I work all day and have to leave him in his x-pen. When he is free in the early morning and at night, he's happy and wonderful to be around.

"He clearly doesn't like having to be restricted and tears at his wee wee pad until dislodging it from its holder. He then tosses it around; not so lovely to come home and see the mess. He was very well trained by his breeder and does his pee and usually his poop on the pad. I think he is just frustrated not to have more freedom. Does anyone have any suggestions about what I can do to get him to stop this behavior? He loves his bully stick, but I'm afraid to leave him home with it unsupervised. Any advice would be most appreciated."

I really hate to say this but Yorkies need to be around people. I know you have to work, but maybe you could get him a sitter. I have never had a Yorkie yet that would let me out of their sight and I never leave them alone except for very brief periods where I can’t take them.

However, maybe if you put the little guy in the bathroom with his toys, food, water, and no collar as they can get it stuck in their mouths and choke. Dennis is never happy in the bathroom, but he is safe!

I wish I had better advise but maybe someone else that has to work can offer some better help.

The simple solution would be to crate him. Confine him in a small enough space to discourage that sort of behavior. People have to get out of their mind that crating a dog is somehow cruel. If he is tearing away the pee pad i would get rid of it during the day because if a piece of that gets into his throat who knows how that will end. Crating my dog stopped us from coming home to a mess. Took us a week to train her to go on command on the pee pad, took us a couple of days to train her to go on command in the litter box. Took us a day to get her to go on command on actual litter. We just changed her litter to a horse bedding(much cheaper for a lot more product and does the same thing but maybe even better) and that took us one day. I say all that to say that crating my dog stopped a long, frustrating process of accidents and potty training. If you stop him from going where he is all day you can get him to go where you want him to go.

I would also take him for a good long walk when you got home.

I do not think your dog wants more freedom by himself. Just the opposite. Because the space is big (to him), he becomes bored. He didn't know how to entertain himself or what to do with himself. More toys at this point won't help him either.

I'd crate him for now, until he learned how to spend his time alone. What you want to do is to increase his space slowly and little by little.

Crate a Yorkie puppy for 8 + hours?? You guys really do this? These little guys are supposed to eat 3 times a day aren't they?

How old is the pup in question?

I would continue with the xpen. I also agree about not leaving a bully stick. A bored puppy might eat the whole thing and be sick.

My only suggestions would be to get up early and take him for a long walk. If possible, come home and have lunch with him or arrange for someone else to spend a little time with him during the day.

On the weekends, use the time to work with him on proper xpen behavior (pooping on the pad and leaving it alone). Make sure he spends some time alone in the xpen while you are home.

Leaving a t-shirt that you slept or just walked in will give him some comfort too.

Yorkies are wonderful b/c they love their people so much. They are a pain to leave for the same reason.

I would agree with crating him and would definatly disagree with getting another one to keep him company, all your going to do is have two dogs making a mess. I'm not sure how long you're gone for, if it's over 6 hours, than I wouldn't leave him in a crate, perhaps a dog sitter? I had the privilage of bringing my pups to work with me until I felt they were ok to leave at home for the duration of work time. You really need to put in double time to teach good vs bad behavior. When he does anything good, PRAISE THE HELL OUT OF HIM! And when he's bad, ie peeping on floor or ripping at the wee wee pad, clap and say his name then NO! I firmily believe in a good swap on the nose. It's taught my pups not to do it again without installing too much fear. Repremanding him after he's already been bad is useless. They forgot what they've done. If you put in the work, it'll pay off for life. Worst comes to worst, you can always hire a dog trainer. I know several people that have had EXCELENT results. Good luck to you!

Definitely not at 8 hours straight! Have a neighbor come by every couple hours to check on him and walk him around.

Remember a tired puppy is a good puppy. I agree....get up earlier and play, walk, whatever to wear his tiny butt out. Ramsey comes to work with me....after busy morning....she naps most the day. When we get home, she's raring to go again 'til bed time.

I think 8 hours in a crate is a long time for a puppy.....

id say the pup is bored and uses the pad as a toy, i would leave him with a big dog chew, one thats too big and hard for him to eat, it will keep him busy for hours and wear him out and there will be no chance of him eating it and being sick,it worked for mine.

I don't know how much this would help, but with Daisy she use to tear up pee pads all the time too.. I changed to the washable ones and have never had a problem since then. I think that once they get on it to go potty and hear the noise that it makes that's too much for them to resist... With the washable ones there is no noise.. She she never so much as tried to tear it up and if she did she would be unsuccessful.. LOL Maybe he'll settle down once he can't tear pee pads anymore..
