| yorkie grooming now that I have managed to post a photo of rigo in the gallery there are several grooming questions I would like advice on. I groom rigo myself and it has taken a year of weekly gentle bath sessions for him to even allow me to touch or comb and clip him without him constantly growling and freaking out trying to bite me. Up to now I have settled for clean and presentable. Now that he has settled down immensely, I need some help. For one rigo's fu man chu is wirey and wayward. The longer I let it grow the more it sticks out. Is there a remedy for this? How exactly should I trim his ears and mane? What do you use to get the hair out of his ears? I have been sneaking my dh's electric trimmer to trim the area between the eyes, is this ok? How does one deal with the very fine stray belly hair? He still freaks out when I groom his feet. I feel so bad, but I must imprison him on his back between my legs to clip nails and trim him up. I am assuming at this point he will never be able to go to a groomer. I found one internet site with directions and small photos on how to cut a yorkie, but I really need something better as a guide. Any and all advice is appreciated. The up side of his weekly torture sessions is that last week for the first time, after we got "done", he followed me around and jumped up for loves and pets for about 4 days. Before he always acted like the survivor of a satanic ritual. |

| I can tell you what I do with mine and maybe it will work for you. I use a powder madr by R7 for cleaning the hairs out of the ears. Put the powder in and take your finger to move it around in there then use your fingers to start pulling the hair out of the ear canal. You can also use forcups to pull the hair out of the ears. Only one of mine's hair sticks out like your talking about and I found out he has a cow lick there so it is kept cut shorter. I use sissors to cut the hair from around his eyes only because I personally do not like the shaved look but if you like it then that's fine what your doing. They do make a pocket trimmer to use around the eyes. On my males I keep about half the belly hair shaved off as I do not like the pee pee in it all the time. I hope I have helped you some. Good Luck. |

| I can't tell too much from the picture (the bassets are adorable by the way) but looks like you have a pretty good handle on it. I can't really see his face in the picture but what I can see looks great. Since yorkies are shown in full coat there is no correct yorkie hair cut. It's just a matter of personal preference. Some people use electric trimmers around the eyes. I prefer thinners myself on a yorkie. I feel like the electric trimmers/clippers take off too much. But its just a personal preference. Thinners are a great tool for making minor adjustments to faces without the worry of cutting off a big chunk by accident with regular sissors. I would use the clippers to shave his bottom a bit and his belly up to about an inch or so infront of his penis to keep him cleaner. You can shave down the inside of his back thighs a bit also. I never really understood the need for shaving the belly until I actually got a boy dog! You can use the clipper to shave the top third of his ears inside and out if you want to. As far as the 'fu man chu' I'm assuming the little mustache/beard stuff around his mouth?...if it's sticking up you have two choices...either trim it shorter or let it grow longer and hopefully the weight will help it lay down. I would probably try to let it grow for a while and see what happens. Hmmm, trimming feet....yorkies are notoriously bad on their feet and nails. I have never managed to trim nails while my dogs are in my lap. They are more obedient if placed up on a counter for me but all I can suggest is just do what ever works for you. The last time I trimmed Brandy's nails I smeared peanut butter on the counter and it distracted her just long enough for me to get the job done.
