Default Cancer of the skin in Yorkies?

Have any of you out there ever had a Yorkie that had an open sore for over a year that just would not heal? I have posted this here before but not with what I read today. I was reading a dog book and it stated that a sore that would not heal or a recurring sore could be cancer. A couple of vets have looked at this sore on Oscar and did not think much of it. They said if it would not go away, they could remove it. I think I will have it removed (I hate to have to put him under anesthesia again) but I think it should be tested to be sure. What are some of your thoughts on this and have any of you ever seen this or been thru this with your Yorkies or other dogs? I just thought it was a pesky sore but after today, I am worried it could be something more. The sore itself is about the size of a regular M&M and oozes a clear liquid that causes caking in the hair. I keep the hair clipped and clean with peroxide and apply Bactoderm but it will not go away.

Most doctors who are familiar with cancer can tell most of the time whether a lesion or sore is cancer just by looking at it. The fact that a couple of vets were't concerned causes me to believe that they didn't think it was cancer.

Nevertheless, if my dog (or anyone in my family) had a sore that just wouldn't heal, I would get it taken care of.

Good luck - Carol Jean

Omg Oh dear...

Deb, if your vet has offered to remove the spot, I would do it. Any sore open for this long can't be normal. I am hoping it's something minor. Obnoxious, but minor.

Please please let me know how things go, and please give my buddy Oscar MAJOR kisses from his Wosie , and Dreama sends some too.

Default Thanks guys...

I am calling my regular vet today...he needs his shots anyway. While there, we will discuss getting this thing taken care of. It is bothersome, I think mostly to me. When I am rubbing him, I always stumble over it and just the fact that it won't heal concerns me. He scratches it from time to time, but for the most part he really does not seem to care that much about it. I will let you know how the visit goes.

Default We go today...

I got an appointment for 2:30 today with another very good vet in my area. He did surgery on our American Bulldog and we were very pleased with him and his clinic. That will be a 3rd opinion and we will go from there. I will let you all know this evening when we get home. Oscar is excited as we are taking a bike ride to the vet! He always looks forward to that!!!

A few months ago Chloe got a sore on her neck and she scratched at it constantly! It was real nasty and oozed also! I thought it was a ring worm but when I took her to the vet he said that it looked like some kind of bug bite that she just irritated by scratching at it! He gave me some medicine and it cleared right up! I am hoping that your baby will get well soon, please keep us updated.

I have had melanoma so I know more than I wish I did. First of all doctors, dermatologists and vets make mistakes and can't always tell just by looking at it. I had melanoma long after the first time I asked about it.

If it were me (again) my pet, or another loved one I would consider 2 choices. One is have the entire sore and surrounding area removed, make sure there are "clear margins" in the biospy.

The second choice would be to have a punch biopsy done. This is a quick procedure and on people they do it with a local anesthesia. If it comes back as cancer, they can do a more extensive surgery.

Good luck with the pup.

And people, use sunblock, hats, long sleeves, see a dermatologist for a full body skin check at least once a year. women, check your legs. if you have a man in your life, check his back. More men die b/c it is on their back where no one sees it.

Have your hairdresser check you head and let you know if she sees anything. My hairdresser saved a woman's life that way.

Did that sound like a public service announcement? sorry, i get crazy about this.

Not at all. I think it is very important that people be informed and especially now that the weather is warming up in northern parts of the country. Soon it will be summer and people need to more cautious about their sun intake. Melanoma is one of the fastest growing types of cancer in this country but also one that is highly avoidable as long as people protect themselves properly.

Default We are back from the vet...

And I think it will all be good news! Oscar got all of his shots...and I mean all of them. He was such a little trooper...never a wimper or anything. You can't even tell he has had shots...but the worse may come tonight when all that kicks in. He hated the stick up his butt to check his stool worse than the shot I think...he just hates that thing! The sore appears to be a Sebaceous Cyst or a fatty type tumor that is easily removed so I will be scheduling a day surgery for him soon to get that thing removed. It is a tiny sore on the surface of the skin but about the size of a large grape under the skin. I will have them send it off to be tested as well. Other than that, Oscar is one healthy puppy! Good reports all the way around! Thanks guys for your thoughts and prayers for my little guy today! We sure do appreciate it!
