| What to look for in buying a new pup? I am looking for another yorkie. I am wanting one that has the silky/silvery hair. (blue/gold) I know of some really good breeders and they have healthy pups. What should I look for in paticular wanting these traits? |

| I would look at the sire and dam and see if they have the traits you want.

As a breeder, when I sell a pup for pet, they are over 4 months and I can only give a ballpark idea of size and a best guess for colour and I make sure the buyer understands that.

| I am looking at a litter of 8wk old pups and the mom is dark but has some silver shading in her with a golden look in her tan areas. The dad is a silver and tan. The coats look good but I don't know if they are the silky or not. I have a girl that both her parents were the silver and gold and had the silky coats but mine has the black/gold color and the cottony coat. I am not picky for the size. IMO the bigger the better. I just didn't know what to look for in wanting these traits. I wouldn't mind having a full grown one with these traits but I can't seem to find anyone that wants to give theirs up. And unfortunatly I am not allowed to adopt from resuce because I have kids. |

| IMHO, all that matter are health and personality.

Don't buy at 8 weeks of age, they should be minimum 12 weeks at time of going to a new home. You won't know for sure what the coat type will be when the pup is still under 6 months and as I stated before, colour can end up staying dark or going light even in an older puppy. At six months, the breeder should know for sure if it is cotton or silk coat. Under six months, coat type can sometimes be deceiving. I also agree that if you are just looking for a pet, health and cute would be the most important factor you will be looking for -- and from a reputable breeder.

| I am looking at the pups now they are only 8wks old but the breeder will not let me take one until it is 12wks old. I didn't know mine had a cotton coat until I was on this forum. I thought she had a silk coat. I feels silky and it hardly ever mats. But I was told since in her pictures her eyes are yellow that means she has a cottony coat. I am confussed about the coat types. |

| I bet its a silk coat. I am not convinced of the flash eye color theory on coats. My Chachi has a cotton coat and it feels thicker and matts easily.

| Coat type is certainly confusing. You can have a really wooly cotton coat, a cotton coat that isn't so wooly, a modified coat, and a silk coat with variations within a silk from a coarser heavier silk to a finer silk. I have also seen a bristly type almost like a Cairn Terrier which doesn't grow very well either. If the eye reflects an orange or yellow, that is not a silk, it could be cotton or modified. But the eye reflection cannot be detected until minimum 4 months of age and sometimes older. I have a boy that I was running on for show purposes and just wasn't sure if he was a heavy silk or soft coat. I finally saw the orange eye shine at almost six months so know he is not silk. Parents is no assurance as a soft coat can come forward from back in the pedigree. |
