| How do I stop my new adult yorkie from biting? Hi everyone. I am new to this forum. About 2 months ago, my husband and I adopted a 2 yr. old female yorkie named Lucky from a humane society. She has made a lot of progress with us and we adore her, but we are having several problems with her. The biggest problem is that she bites A LOT! She is extremely friendly and vivacious and I believe that she does it more out of happiness and exitement than anything. If we say "no" firmly, she gets more excited and the bites get more frequent and harder. Shaker cans work well as short term deterrents, but it is not practical to carry them with us everywhere. I have found several web sites detailing how to stop puppies from mouthing and biting, but I have not found anything on how to stop these habits in adult dogs. Does anyone have any suggestions? | You probably can apply the same method used on puppy on an adult dog. If she is bitting because of excitement then she doesn't realize she is hurting you. I've been bitten by one of my dogs before beause she was overly excited. I screamed loudly in pain to let her know she is hurting me. It usually works. Another thing you may want to try (never tried it before) is to put bitter apple stray on your hand or wherever your dog is bitting. The bad taste may help stop her from bitting. I hope these advice helps. |

| Yes I agree with the bitter apple spray. If you don't want it on your hands put latex gloves on and spray it on the gloves. Then have a play session and she will learn right away not to go near the hands with the mouth. I actually had to do this with my puppy and my 6 year old son. They love to play together but those puppy teeth were really hurting my son's hands. It worked very well. |
