Sleeping in the bed, help please We have a 4 month old yorkie & her name is Brittni. We have done everything by the book, except we let her sleep in the bed with us at night which was probably the wrong thing to start doing. She is 80% potty trained. However, sometimes she will go in the bed at night at the foot of the bed. Resulting in washing all the sheets & blanket at least 1 or 2 times per week. We take her water away at 8pm & take her to potty outside several more times before we go to bed at 10:30. We also set an alarm to take her out at 5:30 & she usually makes it until then, but sometimes (& I can't find a rhyme or reason) she goes to the foot of the bed & pees at 4 or so. My question is, is it too late to start putting her in her crate at night by my bed? I tried this morning after she peed & she cried for 50 minutes straight. Thought my husband might just lose it, he was so aggravated. Is it ok to put her in there & put her in the guest room tonight? I'll take any suggestions. I LOVE her with all my heart, but I'm burned out by all of this.

In the summer that like to sleep in their crate. I think it is a lot cooler for them in there. It isn't too late to start putting her in her crate at night by your bed. She will probably cry throughout the night(some yorkies are known to cry for a couple of weeks before they finally stop or the owner gives up) And it is fine to put her in there & put her in the guest room tonight. | |

She will be all right in her crate in another room. When she gets a little older, she might stop peeing in your bed too. She's still pretty young to hold it all night IMHO. I got Lexy a Snugglepups bed and she is sooooo attached to it! You might try one and see.

I think the crate thing is fine too, but a solution that worked for us was to actually put a pee pad a the end of the bed if she is pee pad trained. Or provide a way for her to get off the bed to go relieve herself if she has to during the night. We have stairs we have made by our bed so they can get up and down with out injury. Little puppies have to go more often and cannot always hold it throught the night so the pee pad on the bed actually helped with the housebreaking. Good luck!

I know I don't have near the experience some of the others do (as this is my first puppy). Tess is 3 months old and she sleeps all night. I keep her in a very small blocked off area about the size of her doggie bed. She goes to sleep between 9 and 10 and wakes up about 6 and she holds it all night. A crate is a good idea, but I sort of made my own "crate" area as I never really caught on to the whole crate training thing since I'm home all day. She is about 95% house trained at this time, but does sleep all night and hold it all night. I would try the crate at night if I were you and definitely put it in another room. She'll cry at first, but you must ignore her and pretty soon she'll realize that's where she needs to sleep and will accept it. Let us know how it goes!!

Thank you all for the great advice & support. I appreciate the suggestions. I am going to put her in her pet taxi for tonight. If all goes well after a couple of weeks then I may be able to let her have a trial run in the bed again as a treat, but if she pees... Poor little baby, she doesn't know she's done anything wrong b/c she is so quiet I never get to catch her in the act! haha One last question, eensor, what is a Snugglepups bed & where would I be able to find one? Also, does she sleep in it on the floor?

I would certainly put her in a crate for sleeping. Snoodles sleeps in a crate every night, and when we have to go somewhere she can't come, we put her in there so she is safe. I can take the crate anywhere, and she will sleep in it. Makes it easy for traveling. I kind of think if you keep moving her from bed to crate and back again etc, she will yell every time you crate her. It has to be one or the other, I would think! Pat

| When I first got Ranger I was afraid he would wet the bed. The whole crate thing didn't go over so well with my FH, as Ranger would cry for hours upon hours in his crate preventing anyone to get sleep. So we let him sleep with us, and we've never had an incident! When we first got him we fed him routinely 3 times a day. His last meal was no later than 7 o'clock and we left water for him 24/7 (we noticed he wouldn't drink much water after dinner). Before bedtime he'd go outside to potty, and we always made sure he peed and pooped before going back inside. I think keeping a schedule kept him on track and prevented any accidents during the night. During the day that was a different story , but he's growing up now and is 99.9999% potty trained! Good luck to you and your baby!!

Thanks again. This is my first post & you guys are very helpful. We've also been keeping her on a tight feeding schedule, but I think she has yet to just realize that peeing in the bed is bad because we can't catch her sneaky self in the act. However, what is funny is that she absolutely WILL NOT poop in the bed. She poops at about 7:30 or so every morning & barks to let us know that she needs to go. Funny, huh? I talked to my husband & we are going to put her in her crate from now until she is fully potty trained. She stays in her crate during the day while I am at work & I come home at lunch to let her out & play with her everyday. Total she is in there now for 8 hours per day with a break in the middle. She is used to it & has no problem - doesn't even wimper when I put her in there during the day. So it'll just be the initial getting over the "trauma" (haha) of being put in her crate at night. I know she will be fine. I will give you all an update tomorrow on how tonight goes! Wish me luck!

OOh! That's a long time in a crate. Can you make a play area enclosed of course, with her crate there? That way she can go in if she wants to and come out to eat or play! I realise it is a problem when one works! The longest Snoodles has been in the crate outside of night time is about one hour. Pat

Oh, she is fine in there during the day. She sleeps the whole time while facing our lab in her crate also. It is only 4 hours & everything I read online & they told me at the vet & puppy training is that 4-5 hours is their limit as puppies & that's all she is in there for. They also said that after she is about 8 months old, you can leave her in there for even longer periods of time...not that I will. I love going home at lunch everyday & playing with her.

I can answer your question about a Snugglepup (or Snugglepet). I ordered mine from : www.snugglepet.com It's a stuffed animal for you pup that has a velcro opening in it's tummy to insert a battery operated "ticking heart" or a heat pad. Can't wait to try it with my new pup (not till July though).
