| x-pen vs. small room? I read about people who have their dogs in an x-pen type setup when they are away, or unable to monitor the dog constantly. First, let me make sure I'm clear on this....the difference (besides size) between leaving a dog in a crate, and leaving a dog in an x-pen, is that they are supposed to train NOT to go to the bathroom in the crate, right? And I assume that you can give them that option in an x-pen with pads or what have you, if you want? If that's correct, my question is....what is the difference between leaving them in an x-pen (with food, water, pads, bed, or whatever you want), and shutting them in a small room such as a bathroom, or large closet, with all of the same, if the room is doggy-proofed? Just asking because I don't see that referenced as much. AND (this slightly bizarre question just occurred to me! ), has anyone ever trained their dog to get in the TUB to use their pads or litter box?! Seems like any necessary cleanup would be so quick and easy that way! |

| Well, a weird thing...I do leave mine in my masterbath room all day! Its very spacious for them!!!! I would leave the peepee pads on the one side of the room for them, but everytime I came home, well..I would have peepee and poopoo inside the bathtub! Very easy to clean up! So I put a peepee pad in the bath tub and still had the other! They still went in the tub! Never once used the one on the floor! LOL! So yes, mine go in the bath tub to use their peepee pads!!!! But they only use peepee pads when we are not home!!! Any other time, they go outside!!!!! Silly boys I have huh?? LOLOL!

| Yup, that's the difference. Some people do put pads in the crate but if you are crate training you aren't supposed to. There's really no difference (that I can think of at least) between putting them in a small PUPPY SAFE room or an xpen.

| I don't see any difference between an xpen and a small puppy proofed room. |

| HEE! Okay, so I wasn't completely crazy on the tub thing! Now if you could just teach them to use the potty, and flush! Although, seriously....how do they get in there?! They're big enough to jump, I guess? I was thinking, stepping stools or something (as opposed to stepping IN stools, har har! ) |

| Wow, Mandy, I wasn't sure about the tub. I didn't know if they would be able to get in and out. Lucky you!

I don't know how they do it! Its sooo weird!! LMAO!! I honestly think its mainly Brasco! I can tell by their poopoos!!! But he is sooo good with it!!! Now, if I had tried to train them do do that, it would never happen!!! I think Luigi holds it til I get home!! LOL! And the worry wort I am, I have a gazillion blankets in the bathroom spread all over the floor and lots of pillows too!!!! Makes a little nervous about him jumping up and down, but they are tougher than we think, I guess!!!!

Mandy, I always say that to Gus, "If I tried to teach you that, you'd never do it!"

| Let me tell you-just come home one time and find the door facings splintered, the furniture chewed and a hole in the dry wall and you will soon buy an Xpen and all the goodis they need. Sure has saved the remainder of the house.. |

| I just bought an X pen last night at Petsmart, and it is HUGE!! I used to keep my babies in a crate when I left the house, but thats because I have no small room to keep them in, and my babies are too rough when they play, so I am afraid to leave them in my bathroom. My largest bathroom is actually almost the same size as this X pen. They love the pen, they were in and out of it all day(so were my kids) and they never did that with the crate. But, the only place I had to put it in was my formal living room, because the other rooms in my house have too much furniature. My formal L.R. is almost empty. And this pen takes up nearly half of the room. BTW..all my rooms have wood floors, so I am not too worried about accidents. I tried putting up baby gates to keep them in the kitchen, but they jumped them, and I have two openings to my kitchen. Anyway, I love the X pen, and so do they, but it was just an alternative to a crate, because I have no other choice. It was crate or Xpen! |

| Aria's room was the guest bathroom, which we didn't use so it worked out perfectly. She had toys & the room to play, her crate to sleep in, puppy pad and food & water all day while we were at work. We put a baby gate up so she could still see out and not be locked in a bathroom with the door closed. We never had any problems with her chewing stuff...although she did get the TP once and make a huge mess (I am sure she had a blast!) needless to say we never replaced the roll.
