| Afraid of the retractable leash? LOL I have been wanting to get a retractable leash for Daisy and finally picked up a reasonable one yesterday. She loves to wander and jog ahead of me but Im not always up to jogging so thought this would be good. Well she's afraid of it! If she gets to far and I have to click it to stop the pull..she jumps! And I guess because its new its stiff so she feels like Im tugging her back when she goes to walk ahead of me and she stops and waits. I guess that part will just take time using it...but I think its kinda funny that sh'es afraid of the leash...lol Anyone else dealt with this?

| Well if she is afraid now, let me tell ya DON'T ever drop the part you hold.. Good Grief, I have done that,, and He took off, and the thing continued to hit the ground and he continued to run from it,, Oh it was ugly, Luckily it was in an alley and at night, no action or cars.. He eventually ran under a parked car, and ran around the tires, and got all tangled, so I was able to calm him and untangle him, then I prayed that the car didn't have an alarm, so that the whole process wouldn't start all over....

i think it will just take some getting use to! Even though shes' small she sure can tug the regular leash so it hought giving her some more "room to roam" would be better. especially since I have no where I can put her outside to be by herself

| I have one for Oscar and have used it since I got him at 8 weeks. I love, love, love it. I can let him run or keep him right there by me. Even tho we live out in the country, he has to go out on a lead now because of all the crap he was getting into and tasting...made him sick so he can't do that anymore. He runs to the door where the leash is hanging to get "hooked up". They are wonderful creations for sure and like was said earlier, don't get it wrapped around a bare leg and never grab the line while the dog is running out....you can actually sever a finger according to the package. I have gotten a pretty bad burn on my hand with a larger dog and a retractable leash. Daisy will get used to it. Oscar knows when I click it, it means to stop and regroup!

| I was using the retractable leash until I read on another forum where a Yorkie was killed by it. The owner dropped it and it rolled up with so much power by the time it hit the little one in the head it had to much force and it killed her.

| When i was training Harley on a retractable leash, i got him use to it in the house for a couple of days and then in the back yard and then for walks, try just clicking it in the house for a couple days and a small area in your yard and then small walks, i'm sure she'll get use to it.... |

| I don't use a retractable leash for walks. I use a regular leash. But when we are on road trips I use the retractable leash to take them potty. It kinda freaks my girls out if I walk beside or behind them while they are looking for a potty place. So now I just put the retractable leash on and let them walk around while I stand in one place. They get the job done faster that way! Mine were afraid of the retractable leash at first but now it don't faze them a bit. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I just got one for Cali thinking it wpuld help when I am walking the two dogs. Well my dtr went with me for a walk the other day and she of course had to walk Cali and she would let her go too far on the leash, we live in a subdivision where this is traffic and I had to keep telling her to rein her in. She's 20 years old and couldn't get the concept that if she could go 16 feet in front of her she could turn towards the street and be in the middle of the street. So I will only use it in the back yard to walk her.

| I don't use a retractable leash for Tatum. There have been a few times while at the ballpark that I had to use her leash (attached to a harness) to literally pull her up into my arms when another dog came at her in a menacing way. Even if you're not in a situation like that, there are still times you need to get your dog in your arms or at your side in a hurry and that's harder to do with the retractable. I can understand using one to take walks in an area where there is no danger (traffic, other animals) but can't give any advice in that area.

| We use a retractable leash for walks. It took me a while before I was used to it enough to go down the street. We keep it short for the busy streets, give her a little more freedom on the quiet side streets and let her go full length when we get to the park. Punkin is terrified of the end we hold - it does make a huge bang when you drop it on the kitchen floor. She still lets us hook her on though - I guess she knows it is a sacrifice for getting to go for a walk. Punkin is always on a leash when we go out the door. We live on a very busy city street (busy for Halifax, NS . Scary!
