| Crating?? I am too late?? I am planning a trip on the summer, and I need help learning how to crate, Tinkerbell has never been crated before, I hope she doesn't freak out .I bought this crate today. I hope you all can guide me on this one. Oh yeah I almost forgot, she is used to being free all day, How can I make this easy? She is almost 4 months old, does that makes it harder or is it still time? |

She'll be fine...even though it may not SOUND like it. Leave it accessible and she'll start going inside it on her own. Placing a few treats in there doesn't hurt either....

| Hey Micaela- I took KimMee everywhere with me in her crate- mine looks very similar, I just walked around the city and took a lot of cab rides with her. Maybe you can do this too. Good luck with this training- you will have to be strong and not give in to her whining |

| Crates aren't as bad as we think they are... We were afraid that Chewie would hate us for crating him during the day - but the only thing that he hates about the day, is the fact that we both work! He wants us to be home to curl up with all day long - and his puppy dog eyes are sad after our morning walk... A small aside here - we purchased Chewie last year, when he was two and a half years old - and received a very shaky history on him. The sellers hemmed and hawed regarding if he had been crated etc... So to our knowledge, he was not crate trained before we had him. Now, Monday-Friday he lives in "Chewie's House" (his crate) while we are at work. His regular crate is much larger than what would be considered the proper size for a Yorkie under 6 pounds, but we had gotten a great deal on it, and it's big enough for his bed, toys, dishes, etc... And we figured that if WE were in a crate all day that we'd appreciate being able to stretch our legs a little bit! Anyhow, we purchased a smaller "travel" crate for a trip in the fall - and we baited him into it with his favorite beefy smelling treats (Jerky, Pupperoni, and the rest of the "Puppy Crack" type treats that smell fabulous to him). He was pretty much okay with the whole travel crate, but while we were on vacation and had to leave him in the crate for short periods of time I know that he was upset - and missed the spacious "Chewie's House" that he has at home. I think that if I had it all to do over again that we would have brought his regular crate, or a similarly sized travel crate, with us. So - if the crate you purchased and showed photos of is the only crate that Tinkerbell has come in contact with you're in much better shape than we were on our trip! And you're planning in advance! Kudos to you! What I was trying to get at - is that Chewie did JUST FINE learning to live in a crate - and certainly your little Tinkerbell will learn that "Tinkerbell's House" is a safe place! | Before Toto's first flight, I just sat her carrier in the den and left it there for a couple of days [with the front and top unzipped]. I watched her and she showed curiosity but didn't go in. I then placed her very favorite toy way in the back so she would have to step inside to get it ... and left it there. She was soooo funny ... she would peek in there and whine a little and finally flew in really fast and grabbed it out. A few days after that, I put a treat in the back and she dashed in, grabbed it and ran out ... this time, not so fast! We "celebrated" with praise & happy talk! After she acted comfortable with just going in and seeing that there was nothing "scarry" in there, I began to carefully zip the front, take her out in it to a favorite place, etc. Before long, she only associated good things with it and now, all I have to do is say "kennel up" and she's in there like a flash!! Also, we never, ever take her out of it through the top although we always leave it open where she can stick her head out and look around. We only allow entrance/exit through the unzipped front. When we go through security and I have to take her out and carry her, they just love her! Some of them will want to hold her and show her off! It amazes them that she is so sweet and calm! I can leave her sitting on the floor at the airport and she has never jumped out the top! It's like her "safe" place to her. The only thing about the carrier that makes her sad is when we have to zip the top to board the plane and she is "highly insulted" to have to stay under the seat but does not cry or protest! She's a great little traveler!!

| You may be surprized that she takes right to a crate. Many dogs like a crate as their own "space" and a place to retreat when things get too much for them. Just place her in a crate for 5 or 10 minutes and come back and take her out.....and increase the time...put her in the crate before you go to the grocery store. It may not be long, if you leave the door open and you miss her....she will be in her crate. |
