| Microchipping..... Do most people who find a dog even consider that it might be microchipped? I asked most of the people I work with - regular people - none of them had their dogs microchipped and didn't know much about it and had never considered it --- plus if they found a stray - they wouldn't even think that it might be microchipped - and wouldn't know where to go or how to find out if they did..... They all said they might call the dog pound and would watch the papers for "lost dogs." ******** We all thought - wouldn't it be wonderful - if the newspaper - right after the section titled "Lost Pets" stated: The pet you found may be microchipped - You can find out at your local animal shelter. And -- then go on to list the people looking for their pets... We are considering asking our newpaper to include this information as a public service...... Carol Jean |

| I am glad you put this thread in. I asked my vet about microchipping and he said that he is just starting to do it, and wants to work on bigger dogs first to make sure that he is perfect at it before working on the furrbabies. I took a trip to Ohio with Jack a couple of months ago and was worried all the time that he wasn't "chipped". I think it is a great way to identify your pup.

| Bailey was microchipped before we brought him home from the breeder. I didn't know a whole lot about it so I did some net research and asked my vet some questions. It is a great way to return dogs to their owners. Having information in the local papers is a great idea because so many people don't know about this (like me before Bailey). Having found a stray last year, I know it would have been so much nicer for him to have been chipped then to spend the time at the shelter like he did.

| Good Idea! Well, I think it is a good idea for 2 ewasons... A couple of years ago I worked for a vet and there was a couple that came in with a Chihuahua that they accidentally hit but it was still alive. they first thing we did was scan for a chip and it had one! We were able to notify the owners and all was well in the end. And yes the dog lived! The other angle is that when Katrina hit they were able to identify many pets because of the chips. Then when they were posted on the found portion of petfinder reunion were expedited. Shelters are trained to scan them first. It may not find ALL pets because some people may not know about it yet BUT it is gaining in popularity. My furbabies are getting them next month. Lust my thoughts!

| I always microchip my horses in case they run away or are stollen out here in the mountains, and I am going to do my dogs from now on too. It is still a fairly new thing to do, but is catching on. I like your idea to contact my local newspaper to print the information you stated here. Great idea! Most vets will check for chips when an animal is brought in if you ask them to, but I wonder about the humane society and lost pets advertised in the paper.

| Great Post!!! Being microchipped is the ONLY way! My friend almost lost her furbaby, the people who found her wanted to keep her. They both showed the Police pictures, they looked the same, and the Police had no idea what to do. If it wasn't for the chip, she would be gone. Princess is with me or a family member 24/7 and she is chipped, just incase, you never know. There is no pain to our Furbabies, it's a shot, A shot that could save them.

| I wouldn't go as far as saying there's no pain to our furbabies. (I just got a tetnus booster shot and that hurts!) It's a rather large needle to our little ones since they use the same size needle on a 5 pound yorkie as they do on a 120 pound great dane. bunjee yelped twice when he was injected. but the pain is fleet and they'll forget about it soon enough. And it's definitely worth it! Having the paper list that public service announcement is a great idea. I also really wish vets and other animal care providers would scan an animal in their care as a matter of standard practice (kinda like how they check the pet's vitals every time they show up at the vet's office). That would probably be really helpful in finding lost/stolen pets as well. |

I agree. I have also wished it to be mandatory for all vets offices to scan any new patient that came thru their doors, because as much as we hate to think it,How many people do you honestly think would actually put a found add in the paper or anywhere else for that matter,if they found a cute little yorkie. Not many IMO. | |

| Well - to tell the truth - my vet said that very few dogs complain when he puts in a microchip. Unlike people, he said, they don't know that it's going to be done, aren't expecting any pain, and don't tense up. He said it's over and done before they even know it happened.....and with some immediate petting and a few friendly words, he said they are off and thinking about something else. And - this is especially interesting. He said that how dogs accept shots or any other treatment generally has nothing to do with the size of the dog, and that some of the smaller dogs he cares for are his bravest and least complaining patients. He said a shot should not hurt a small dog any more than it would hurt a large dog (though most dog owner's find this hard to believe). There is feeling only when the needle enters the skin - not further down - and if the serum stings, it will sting any size dog equally ---- or any person for that matter. ---------- My pup is going to get microchipped. I'll let you know how it goes and how he behaves. Carol Jean |

| Our dog pound has a scanner and scan all dogs that are found, and all vets can scan a dog if you find one, and want to see if they are chipped, So I think its a good idea. And Bailey has a tag on his collar saying he is chipped, and how to locate his mommy. So if someone would find him, they would know what to do.
