| Road Runner Hi everyone, My Yorkie, Cassius, is playful, spirited and loving. When we're inthe house he's learned how to sit when called, stay and stand. My problem is that he listens to my commands for the most part while we're in the house. Of course except when the mailman or delivery man comes, then it's no holds bar. My problem is when I let him out in the yard to go potty. In stead of going, he will run around the yard like a maniac. He barks at me and runs from me. The training he's learned goes out the window. I end up chasing him around the yard, trying to catch him. I must look like an idiot running around in my robe and slippers trying to catch him...) Any suggestions on how I can get him to listen to my commands when he's out. I've tried placing him on a lead, but he's not having that. I'll leave the door open and he'll run back and forth many times bringing in sticks, rocks or whatever he can find, back into the house to play hide and seek. I have no problem with this, but I need to get control over him when he's outside. I'm afraid he won't listen to me when it's important for his safety. Please help.

| I'd like some help with this too. Gus runs away from me when I call him. He knows if he comes, we go in and he does not want to. The only way he listens is if I yell sternly (loudly) over and over. It is embarrassing. Rose7 I can't offer any help other than don't chase him, it makes it a game to him. He is a cutie btw. Hopefully, someone will have some answers.

| Have you tried carrying treats with you? You may have to do some obiedience training outside where there are many more distractions.Sometimes you may have to put a long lead on them and practice coming to you. I hope this helps. |

| I think he is still young. Give it time and be consistent. Working outside on the training on a lead is a great idea!! The clicker worked wonders for me with my two other dogs and it has saved their lives I think. When they have gotten out of the yard and we didn't discover they were "on an adventure" for quite a while, we get in the car and drive around with the clickers out the window. They hear that from really far away and they come running!! it's like Pavlov's dog. The programming is engrained and they HAVE to respond. You have to always have that treat ready!! |

| Hi, My pups do the same thing. I've got two outdoor dogs, a St. Bernard and a German Shepard. So whenever I let my boys out the first thing they do is run and find the big dogs, and aggravate them. Not listening to me a bit, or going potty. I got a small pen built in my back yard where I can just put them in. The first thing that they do is go potty, since there is nothing else to do in the pen. I find that when they are running around ignoring me, that if I yell and sternly that they keep on running. But if I call in my really nice voice, like I'm prasing them and calling them good boys, they will run right up to me and in the door. Since I've got two, if I praise one, the other one would die from jealousy if it didn't try to get some of the others praise So praising one will get the other to come up to you. |
