| Breeder said YES but they weren't removed! (Dew claws) Maybe because I'm still a new mom, but I never thought to look at Oliver's claws very closely. Today, though, I noticed that his dew claws were still there!!! I was pretty sure that the breeder would have taken care of that- and sure enough it is in her contract. I e-mailed her today to ask her why they may have been neglected... but I'm kind of questioning what to do next. How essencial is it to remove the dew claws? or does it really matter as long as we are careful? and how difficult (and painful) would it be to remove Oliver's little dewclaws now, at about 5 months? I hope everyone is having a good weekend!

| You can have dew claws removed by the vet, but it is generally done at this age under anaesthesia and may require a stitch or two. Ask if it can be done at the same time as neutering (6 months). If left, they can catch on things and tear out, make sure you keep them clipped short to avoid growing in.

| Don't mind me saying It is just my opinion I hope u don't mind me saying, but I have learned that u shouldn't remove their dewclaws u should file them all the way down, because they can bleed to death if this procedure is done wrong. It is also said to be inhumane to remove them. If you do decide to remove them I would go to a vet to be on the safe side. Good luck with whichever u choose. |

I, mainly, started this thread because so often you hear from a breeder "Yes, tailed docked and dewclasws removed" which is what my breeder said and it wasn't done! I'm more worried about the sketchiness of the breeder than the removal of the dewclaws themselves. ANyways- thank you for your contribution - I'll def. wait to hear back from the breeder, get my vets opinion, and keep the nails short in the meantime.

bizzbeth are these in the front or the rear? If its the front the breeder should have informed you, but the rear might easily be overlooked.

| Just heard back from breeder- She said all pups had dewclaws removed when they were 3-5 days old and then his may have just grown back... I don't know much about this- what do you guys think? I double checked the hind legs and those ones ARE gone so.... maybe the front ones did grow back?

| Yes my puppy has em removed. Yes my doggies were removed, but my aunt tells me that some breeders do keep them on and yes ur right about it being inhumane if they were to get them caught on something and ripped off. Honestly I have only seen 2 dogs in my life time with the dew claws still attached. I remember an old woman whos dogs still had them attached and I remember saying y don't u have them removed lol and she hollered at me "Oh no are you crazy" lol thats when I asked about them and a couple of neighbors have told me that there are people who prefer to not have their doggies spayed or neutered or dew clawed or dock tails or ears. I really am glad to see another side of the story though thank you for your insight. |

| EVERY dog that I have owned or fostered that has had dew claws has ripped at least one out.by accident..(no not all in my possession lol). If you are going to take your dog outside to play they stand a big chance of this happening. They can even do it in your house catching on a blanket..it's not inhumane because trust me if they are just ripped out then that REALLY hurts them..cause 9 times out of 10 they do it outside and get dirt in it right behind that..

| My female still has front dew claws. I wouldn't worry about it too much but if you want them removed it shouldn't be much of a problem to have it done when you have him neutered.

| I do need to add one thing here..all of the dogs were med and big size breed dogs that romped outside..so it may not be a problem with your pup being a yorkie. The only small dogs I've ever owned was a cocker spaniel, my yorkies and my mini pin and they all had their dew claws removed. So as dawn said it may not be a problem..

| bunjee had his back declaws removed by the breeder but he still had his front dewclaws. i was planning to have it removed when he was in for his neutering but the vet recommended against it. she said it's like having your pinky fingers removed. it's gonna hurt and so long as i keep it trimmed, it should not become a problem. |

they can catch their dewclaws on a throw, a blanket, a rug, sofa or chair fabric jumping up or down or merely digging or nesting they can get caught. They remove it with a novocaine injection on older puppies. Ive had one pup have one of his grow back I caught it at about 8 weeks they removed it in seconds after the shot, he never whimpered a bit.
