| Do dogs really understand us humans? Do you think dogs understand humans? I know you can teach a dog to sit, stay, come, lay down etc..... but what is it they understand? The words? I know some folks make hand gestures along with words, but I'm not one of those. So for those of us who rely on vocal commands, is it a word association thing? If that's the case, wouldn't you have to be in the same scenario every time you said sit for the dog to know what you want it to do? Is it the sound of a word they remember? If so, why do they still know what you want when you change the tone of voice? I wonder how much they do understand Clever little rascals

| Some dogs absolutely understand some words - and develop quite an "understanding vocabulary." My daughter's dog understands "Lake" and "Ride" .... to the point that they started spelling these words and now he can spell them too. My little mixed breed certainly understood some words. I could have any person in the world come into my house and face any direction and in any tone say, "I think I see a dog," and she would run to the door, look out the window, start barking, and frantically look around for the dog. They could even word it differently and say, "I believe there is a dog out there." It was the words she understood - nothing else. And, she understood many other words too. Then - I've had other dogs that aren't nearly so clever that way. They always needed more clues. Carol Jean |
