Donating YT 30K Club Member | Please any one with experience with first heat cycles can you let me know if you think Cali could be experiencing these symptoms because of her first heat cycle. I have posted a couple of threads on this but have had very little response. Cali is sleeping more, eating way less, hasn't pooped in 3 days and threw up bile yesterday morning. I took her to the vet yesterday and she said that the heat may be hitting her hard. She gave her 2 meds but I only gave her once does of Centrine as she only vomited early yesterday morning. I did not give her the Metronidazole since she hasn't gone poop in 3 days and last time my pom was on that she didn't poop for 4 days. Cali is 4.4 lbs and 8 1/2 months old. I did get her to eat a little earlier and it was almost a full meal but it was her first meal today. I have been giving her Nutrical as well. When the vet took her temp yesterday she said it was on the high end of normal which could be because of the heat. Also she said when she took the thermometer out that she was ready for a poop because it came out a little on the thermometer, but so far nothing. Any advice is gretaly appreciated. Thanks

| Hi DOn't give metronidazol if she is vomiting, it will make her vomit more. You could give her a little Maalox to settle her stomach. I dont' like the fever part I have never had a bitch run a fever during a heat. They can be a little 'off' as they are a little confused to what is happening to them. DId they run a blood test to check for any infection? There may or may not be one and it may not be in the uterus, it could be elsewhere. Is there a possibility of an impacted baby tooth that she didn't lose? The nutrical should help with the stools or you could give a little mineral oil In a Yorkie give no more than a few drops from an eye dropper. I am just not sure if the symptoms you describe have anything to do with a first heat. But it is a good sign if you have gotten her to eat. Make sure she is drinking give water by mouth with a syringe if you have to. A little pedialtye for a day or two wouldn't hurt either. This is the electrolyte you buy in the drug store for babies. cost is less than $2 for small one. Give about 3 cc's about 4 times a day for a couple of days then stop. The bottle once opened, should be kept in the fridge and only for 72 hours, throw out whatever is left after that. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Lorraine, Thanks for the info. Cali through up again this morning and looked so sad I just didn't think her being in heat would cause all this so I took her into the ER vet and they did do bloodwork which came out ok but the Xray has them concerned that she may have a stringlike obstruction in her intestines. They have kept her and will redo Xray and an ultrasound in 4-6 hours if no change they may want to do surgery and spay her and do liver biopsy at same time. I am concerned because she is still in heat but if there's an obstruction they will have to go in.

| I would suspect she has gotten into something and sometimes things like that don't go through and are passed. Surgery is the only other option. It is a concern that she is in heat, but given the circumstnaces, surgery would be the best option I would think. I doubt they can give her anything to pass whatever it is in there. Our prayers here are with you and your little girl. |

| I just read this, and Patti, none of my bitches have the symptoms you describe when they go into heat. Running her to the vet is what I would do too. Sorry my reply is late. I hope she gets well soon! Hugs, Irene |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Thanks for all the replies. I just had a feeling that what she was experiencing wasn't due to a heat cycle. I will keep you posted. Thanks
